"East Palace" Nam Joo-hyuk described his relationship with Roh Yoon-seo as "comradeship."
On the morning of the 21st at a cafe on Samcheong-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview with Nam Joo-hyuk, the lead actor of the Netflix series "East Palace," was held.
"East Palace" depicts the story of Gucheon (played by Nam Joo-hyuk), who has the ability to move between the world of ghosts (鬼) and the human world, and Seongang (played by Roh Yoon-seo), a court lady who harbors a secret, who, summoned by the king (played by Cho Seung-woo), uncover the curse that haunts the East Palace. It was Nam Joo-hyuk's comeback project after his military discharge and attracted attention even before its release.
Nam Joo-hyuk gave a passionate performance as Gucheon, who had lived apart from the world but, by the king's order, pursues the curse tied to the East Palace. Gucheon is a character who moves between the world of ghosts and the human world and lives a lonelier life than anyone else. He carries inner wounds but also has a playful and free-spirited temperament. He led the narrative from the center of the drama and delivered a weighty presence.
Nam Joo-hyuk, who completed his military service in September last year, ended his relationship with his former agency Management SOOP in December of that year. He later settled at his new agency, Fable Company. In addition to his comeback project "East Palace," he is also scheduled to appear in "Code," the new film by "Weak Hero" director Yoo Su-min.
Nam Joo-hyuk said, "It's my comeback project after discharge, but I always get nervous. I think I get nervous every time I do a project. Each time I tried to reflect this nervousness positively. Although I was nervous, I used it well to make a good work," and added, "Now that the work has been released, I'm feeling excited. I'm curious how many people will view this work. I am thankful and treasuring each day."
Asked, "You and Roh Yoon-seo run around catching ghosts — comradeship? romance?" he said, "I felt more like comrades. I didn't think of it as romance. However, I did keep in mind so that this work would rather spark that kind of interest when it came out. 'Comradeship or romance?' was intended to let viewers have various fun imaginations. On set it was 99% comradeship."
He added, "After it was released, people said, 'If it's not romance, then what is it?' — that was something I kept in mind. (laughter) No matter how much I based my acting on comradeship, something that transcends comradeship will surely exist. That is for the viewers to judge."
