Singer and actor IU (real name Lee Ji-eun) is showing a firm resolve by even filing a request for identity disclosure in a U.S. court to track down the malicious rumors poster.
On the 20th, a representative of her agency EDAM Entertainment told OSEN, "We filed a request for discovery against Meta in a U.S. court to confirm the identity of the poster who spread malicious rumors about IU," issuing an official statement.
IU's side says poster A posted a total of 52 false posts on SNS from March to October last year, damaging IU's reputation. However, unable to identify A's identity and facing difficulties in pursuing domestic litigation, they have requested the local court to order Meta to submit subscriber information it holds such as A's name, address, phone number, email address and access IP.
According to the filing, A spread various malicious rumors ranging from accusations of IU's plagiarism and the false claim that she is Chinese to false claims related to overseas achievements, allegations of deceased-person marketing, suspicions of media control and public opinion manipulation, and false claims linking song lyrics to national tragedies.
IU's side said that in 2024 defamation related to the plagiarism allegation was already recognized and a 30 million won damages award was handed down, and that the poster repeatedly raised claims referring to IU as Chinese nationality or an agent of Chinese capital and mentioning the late Sulli, Jonghyun and Goo Hara with allegations of "deceased-person marketing," expressing a firm stance on strong countermeasures.
In fact, EDAM Entertainment announced in February that through Shinwon Law Offices, which handles IU's legal representation, last year they pursued criminal complaints and civil lawsuits against a total of 96 people, resulting in punishments for the malicious posters including seven fines, one fine plus an order to complete a sexual violence treatment program, three conditional suspensions of indictment with completion of education, and one suspended prison sentence with probation and supervised release.
