Film director Christopher Nolan's unusual working method of not using a mobile phone is drawing attention.
On the 18th (local time), U.S. publication People reported that actor Matt Damon revealed behind-the-scenes details from when he was offered a role in the film 'The Odyssey (The Odyssey)'.
In the interview, Matt Damon said "Nolan is famous for not having a mobile phone," and "so I first received a text message from his wife and producer, Emma Thomas, asking 'are you available to talk today?'"
He added, "Emma always lets me know in advance that 'Chris will call soon,'" and "shortly after, a call came in on Universal Studios' main line from a number that did not display the caller ID."
He added with a laugh, "Even Chris himself doesn't know which number the call will come from."
Earlier, Nolan said in a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he hardly uses text messages or e-mail.
Matt Damon said that when he was offered a role in 'The Odyssey' "we chatted for about 10 to 15 minutes on the phone," and "at that time, it had been about six months since 'Oppenheimer' finished the Academy Awards."
He recalled, "I thought it was simply a call to ask how I was," and "then suddenly Nolan said, 'I'm thinking of starting to work again,' and I responded, 'Already?'"
Matt Damon said he was surprised by the faster-than-expected preparation for Nolan's next project, as he had expected Nolan to take at least a year off after 'Oppenheimer.'
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan also revealed his casting philosophy. He said, "When I was writing 'The Odyssey,' I did not have Matt Damon or Anne Hathaway in mind when creating the characters," and "I try to discover the characters in the process of writing."
He added, "Writing a script while thinking of a specific actor is very tempting because there are great actors I have worked with before," but he said, "but if I do that, it limits the possibilities of the character, because you end up writing the role to match what the actor has shown before."
He added, "After completing the script, the most enjoyable part is wondering, 'What is Matt doing this week?' or 'Should I contact Anne?'"
Meanwhile, the film 'The Odyssey' is based on the epic poem by the ancient Greek poet Homer and stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton and others.
