Actor Hong Ji-min shed tears at her mother's inability to remember her older sister, who died of lung cancer.
On the 18th, the MBN 'Dongchimi' episode aired and showed Hong Ji-min appearing as a guest and revealing scenes of a family trip.
That day Hong Ji-min took her 95-year-old mother, who has been staying in a nursing hospital for four years, on a three-generation trip with her eldest sister.
The mother only remembered Hong Ji-min and her husband. The mother, who did not recognize her granddaughter or in-laws, when the youngest son-in-law asked if she knew his name, immediately shouted "Do Seong-su!" Hong Ji-min smiled and said "My husband knew him."
Hong Ji-min said she is not usually the type to travel often. She said, "After my younger sister passed away, I kept planning trips. You never know when it will be the last time," and confessed, "My second sister was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and passed away two months later. My second sister was the prettiest."
The eldest sister said, "Back then I fought a lot with mom. At the time it was very hard. Just living together itself was difficult, and at the time I happened to be assigned to the United States, so I went to the United States. I applied for permanent residency thinking I would never come back."
She continued, "Suddenly the second sister got cancer and was gone in 49 days. Of the three of us, the second sister cared for mom the most. So when the second sister was dying she said, 'Don't worry, I will take care of mom until the end. Go peacefully.'"
Hong Ji-min also said, "I thought about what memories I had with my sister and realized I didn't have as many as I thought. After that I decided to spend more time with my family."
But while they were exchanging these stories, the mother could not understand any of the conversation. Hong Ji-min said, "At first I couldn't tell my mother (about my sister's cancer). I told her before she passed," and choked up, saying, "But now she doesn't know at all. Looking back, it seems there were some early signs of dementia then."
