Nam Joo-hyuk captivated global viewers with his first comeback project after military discharge, East Palace.
On the 17th, the Netflix series 'East Palace' unveiled itself amid interest. 'East Palace' is the story of Gucheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who has the ability to traverse the world of ghosts (鬼), and the court lady Saenggang (Roh Yoon-seo), who harbors a secret, who, under the king's (Cho Seung-woo) command, investigate the true nature of the curse dwelling in the East Palace.
East Palace generated high expectations before its release as it was Nam Joo-hyuk's first comeback project after his discharge in Sep. 2024. Riding that momentum, East Palace proved its hot popularity by debuting at No. 1 on Netflix's today's Korea top 10 series upon release.
Nam Joo-hyuk also met the expectations of global viewers. Having first encountered the script while serving in the military, he was strongly drawn to the character Gucheon and decided to appear, and before filming he said he shaped the character through repetitive training at an action school.
In the story he transformed into Gucheon, who had lived at a distance from the world but, by the king's order, pursues the curse tied to the East Palace, leading the narrative from the center of the drama with a weighty presence. Gucheon is a character who lives a lonelier life than anyone, moving between the world of ghosts and the human world. Nam Joo-hyuk captured attention by crafting a more three-dimensional character with a playful, free-spirited temperament and inner wounds that are not easily revealed.
Especially, the relationships among the characters unfolding around Nam Joo-hyuk are another point of interest. The changes that Gucheon and Saenggang, who had been wary of one another, experience as they work through incidents together make the story more immersive. This was possible because of the meticulous build-up of momentary emotions and his detailed performance that vividly depicted them.
The face-off with the king was also an unmissable viewing element. Nam Joo-hyuk sharpened Gucheon's conviction and presence through a bold demeanor that directly faced the forbidden king and fierce eyes.
Above all, East Palace is meaningful in that it allows viewers to see Nam Joo-hyuk's expanded acting range. Nam Joo-hyuk portrayed the character by delicately constructing not only the action but also the complex psychology of a person who traverses the world of ghosts. Having steadily broadened his acting spectrum—from youth dramas to heavy realistic works and demanding action genres, each digested in his own colors—he challenged a new genre that spans fantasy and mystery with East Palace, expanding his acting domain once again.
With Nam Joo-hyuk showing a more developed side of his acting and creating a new turning point, attention is focused on what further achievements East Palace will accomplish.
Meanwhile, East Palace starring Nam Joo-hyuk is available on Netflix.<
