Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu was diagnosed with cataracts.
On the 16th, the "God Kyung-kyu" channel uploaded a video titled "Ultimately diagnosed with cataracts during filming, shocking real eye condition of Lee Kyung-kyu that surprised everyone."
That day Lee Kyung-kyu visited an ophthalmology clinic for an examination. He said, "Today I came to the ophthalmologist. As I get older, my vision isn't good. So I need to get my eyes checked. I need to see a lot of good things now, but my eyes can't go. I'll get some tests done. After that, I'm not just going here but will go to an animal ophthalmologist. Dogs are the same as humans. They also have dry eye and cataracts. Dogs usually develop cataracts after six years. So I'm planning to take Jackie, who we raise in our office, for an eye exam."
Afterwards Lee Kyung-kyu underwent various tests. While taking a vision test, when the examiner said, "You see well with your glasses on," he admitted, "I have problems seeing things up close." The examiner explained, "You are probably experiencing presbyopia now," and Lee Kyung-kyu wryly asked, "Don't call it presbyopia, just say my eyes are a bit old," expressing bitterness.
Sure enough, when he took off his glasses the numbers were hard to see, and Lee Kyung-kyu said, "I don't know. Ah, it's sad." He was also shocked when told, "You might see better if you use reading glasses."
After the examination the doctor explained, "There are some minor abnormal findings in the eyes right now. You can see some white dot-like spots here. This is cortical opacity, which means there is some cataract. It's not very severe. But you may feel that your vision is somewhat worse than before. This is not yet at a stage requiring urgent surgery, but ultimately surgery will be necessary at some point," which again shocked Lee Kyung-kyu.
The doctor pointed out common causes, saying, "In cases of cataracts it's not severe, but outdoor exposure and ultraviolet exposure are common stimulating factors for cataracts," and Lee Kyung-kyu admitted, "As a cast member of City Fisherman, being out on the sea for seven years damaged my skin and eyes a lot."
The doctor continued, "Besides cataracts, I see one more thing: there are some lower eyelid wrinkles. These can cause eye discomfort, frequent redness and a foreign-body sensation. There are oil-producing glands under the eyelid margins. Normally the oil layer should spread from above, but it is separated. Summing up, you have cataracts appropriate for your age, conjunctival laxity with white part drooping, and dry eye. Eye drops that slow the progression of cataracts can help, and warm compresses on the eyelids at home can also be somewhat helpful. I generally recommend more active treatment rather than just prevention."
In response, Lee Kyung-kyu said, "I'll set a date and come for the procedure," and left the examination room. Afterwards he joked, "Three things were found," and added, "Decisively, being on City Fisherman and staying on the sea for seven years. I want to file a complaint against City Fisherman. Return my eyes," drawing laughter.
As he left the hospital, Lee Kyung-kyu also said, "Cataracts... I used to be like this. I'm going crazy..." and gave a rueful laugh at the realities of aging.
