Former girl group Sistar member Soyou made headlines after news that she invested 100 million won in semiconductor heavyweight Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and succeeded in buying a home in Seoul after 10 years. Meanwhile, extremes of joy and sorrow are playing out in the stock market as well, so which stars cried and screamed in front of stocks?
An entertainer who cannot be left out when it comes to stocks is Cho Young-goo. Last October on Kim Hyun-wook's channel Kim Hyun-wook's News Not included A Drink, his recent situation was introduced as the "man who lost a total of 5.6 billion won." He lamented that he used to do well as a terrestrial TV entertainment program reporter but recently his schedule has dropped sharply, saying, "I am struggling too. I have no work these days. Do you know how much I lent? I lent 3.5 billion won and have not been paid back. I'm such a crazy person," he lamented.
When asked about losses from stocks, Cho Young-goo said, "I had 2.5 billion won and now I have 450 million won left in my bank account. When I think about that, if I had bought land when I was told to buy land, I would have made a lot of money," and regretted, "I initially put in 20 million won into stocks and made 10 million won in just half a month, and I went crazy thinking 'you can make money this easily.' I shouldn't have made money then, and I wouldn't have gotten into stocks. I took the wrong first step."
Comedian Mija, nicknamed the "human peak detector," put everything into Hynix, suffered a crash and received malicious comments.
Having already lost 100 million won on construction stock investments, Mija entered Hynix in June at 2.7 million won per share, but the stock ironically plunged and protest DMs exploded.
In response, Mija certified a personal account statement showing a return of 11.66% and repeatedly explained, "It's no longer my fault, so stop sending DMs." Nevertheless, one netizen left a comment saying, "Hynix goes up after Mija sells and leaves," and Mija added a crying emoticon with "I didn't sell" to express her grievance.
Ralral and Seo Dong-joo were also despondent over the collapse of the once-trusted SK Hynix.
Not long ago on her personal SNS she posted a photo saying "there are people on the 28th floor" and "special prayer meeting for rescuing Hynix residents on the 280th floor. I won't be greedy if I just break even," It is presumed Ralral bought Hynix at 2.8 million won, but the continuous downtrend pushed it down into the 1 million won range.
On the channel Money in the Trap, Seo Dong-joo introduced herself saying, "Hello. I'm Seo Dong-joo stuck on the 259th floor of the Hynix apartment," which made Gold Time representative Jang Woo-jin burst into laughter. Seo Dong-joo said, "I gathered anxious people" and introduced an expert, adding, "I just checked and it dropped to the 1.8 million won range. Can I cry for a moment and then start? An expert said, "I didn't expect it to fall this much. I saw some shaking, but the speed is too fast. The pension fund couldn't apply the brakes, rebalancing was too late, and that seems to have caused the current situation," while also mentioning a positive side, "still, fundamentals have some room, so it might rebound a little."
Seo Dong-joo said, "We have to wait and see. I think so too," but honestly confessed, "my head thinks that, but my heart keeps burning, and every time I look at the screen on my phone I scream without realizing it."
Hynix drew big expectations when it successfully listed American depositary receipts (ADR) on the U.S. Nasdaq market on July 10 (local time), but this week the stock plunged 15% as soon as the domestic market opened, breaking the 7,000-point level on the KOSPI. On that day Hynix's stock price fell below 1.7 million won but barely recovered to the 1.9 million won range later in the session. On the 15th it jumped 13% to 2.17 million won, but it remains low compared with the peak above 3 million won.
Jee Seokjin cannot be left out of the "stock failure icons." Last November on the channel Jodongari he lamented, "I entered the stock market for the first time in four years but it fell 20% in three days. People around me say, 'You're amazing.' How can I calm that down? I bought at 69,000 won and how did it fall to 50,000 won?" He added, "Haven't you ever faced delisting? I've had four delistings. When March comes I go crazy. Also this January on the SBS variety show Running Man, even at the historic moment when the KOSPI surpassed 5,000, his stock account was full of losses. Staring at the stock app and sighing deeply, Jee Seokjin confessed, "Stocks are running toward 5,000 (KOSPI) but I'm only at 1,500."
Rapper DinDin also suffered losses after investing in stocks based on a friend's recommendation. Loyalty man Kim Bo-sung also revealed on KBS2 Malja Show this month that he was on the verge of losing his entire fortune after keeping stocks out of loyalty. He confessed, "I took profits from a well-performing stock and moved them to another stock, but it was reduced to one-twentieth or one-thirtieth," and said, "I lost an amount roughly equal to two houses in Gangnam to stocks," surprising those around him. Close friend Yoon Hyung-bin added, "If he had kept the stocks he originally had, it would be about 50 billion won now," making those around them feel sorry.
