Singer Kwon Jin Ah mentioned "self-hatred" and confessed, "I suffered from bulimia and anorexia."
Kwon Jin Ah held a showcase at 3 p.m. on the 15th at Tongyang Life Insurance Hall in Hapjeong-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, to commemorate the release of her third EP "Save Me (SAVE ME)" and candidly shared her feelings about "self-hatred."
Her new release "Save Me," which is being released at 6 p.m. that day, is an album that contains the most fierce and passionate salvation, comfort and support found at the end of wounds and self-hatred. The title track "Monster" carries a message of encouragement to cast off the "self-hatred" that has taken hold in the heart and save oneself.
Kwon Jin Ah also put her own experiences and honest stories into the music video for "Monster." About this, Kwon Jin Ah said, "Among the long periods of my self-hatred, one thing I couldn't exclude was the story of eating disorders," adding, "When I debuted as a child I hated my face, I hated my figure, I hated my voice. The quickest thing to escape with was dieting. I suffered from body shape obsession for a long time."
She went on, "I suffered from anorexia and bulimia, and because I couldn't leave that out I put it into the music video," and frankly added, "Of course a healthy body is good, but rather than stories about diverse body types, being thin and pretty is often praised a lot. In that regard I still cannot be free, and that's why I wanted to talk more about that story. I thought I should do it someday, and this time the timing was right so I could record it."
Kwon Jin Ah said about the comfort she offers to those who share the same concerns, "I am someone who has never been touched by the words 'It's okay. You can do well.' When I hear 'Me too, I've had hard times,' I rather feel that 'I'm not the only one fighting a lonely battle.'"
She added, "So I think I'm not good at that kind of comfort. Although I have become more able to accept myself than before, it's still a homework I haven't solved, so I don't know what advice I could give, but exercising hard, eating well and sleeping well seem to be the best."
