Comedian Shin Ki-ru, after recently experiencing the loss of her mother, opened up about her longing for her mother and ultimately shed tears.
On the 13th, the KBS2 variety show Malja Show featured 21-year veteran comedian Shin Ki-ru, who has a 20-year relationship with "Malja grandma" Kim Young Hee.
Having recently lost her mother, Shin Ki-ru said "the words that time will make it better still don't resonate with me," and "still, coming home gave me some comfort," she said honestly. She added, "For a while, it seems more meaningful when people say it's natural to be struggling or tell me 'I've been through it too.'"
When asked what kind of daughter she was to her mother, she expressed regret. Shin Ki-ru said, "I normally have trouble expressing myself to others, and I was even worse with the person closest to me. That feels really bad," and "I didn't know my mother would leave so soon. I thought there would be more time," she said, drawing sympathy. She reflected on herself, saying, "I wasn't affectionate, I was blunt and indifferent as a daughter."
But there were moments when she belatedly realized her mother's love. Shin Ki-ru recalled, "Through the mourners I heard that my mother really bragged about me a lot," and "she would send videos of me on TV to acquaintances," she recalled. She added, "Above all, people said they were really glad she saw me doing well before she passed," expressing a tender feeling.
A remark she heard at the airport in particular finally brought Shin Ki-ru to tears. She said, "Not long ago at the airport, an employee remembered my mother," and "she said my mother always attached my photo to the back of her passport and boasted that 'our daughter,'" she said. She continued, "I was told my mother often said, 'Even though many people may dislike her, please look at her kindly,'" and she could not finish the sentence, choking up and welling up with tears.
After briefly composing herself, Shin Ki-ru said, "I'll eat some jelly. I just can't hold it in," took out jelly and ate it, bringing laughter. She added, "This is how I overcome sadness," using her signature cheerful wit to evoke a smile even in the heavy atmosphere.
