Kim Chang-ok said, "Most people do not acknowledge or hide the fact that someone in the family has a disability or that someone in our house has a problem. My father had a grade 3 hearing impairment. Our family was poor, and my mother rarely registered him as disabled. My husband did not want to admit that he had a disability because of pride," she said.
Kim Chang-ok explained, "We didn't officially inform our children that their father's hearing was impaired. So they didn't know. When I brought a friend home in elementary school, my father did not notice the friend's greeting. My father did not respond. My mother signaled to my father to respond to the greeting. When my father greeted loudly, the friend said, 'Why does your dad talk like that?' That was when I noticed my father's disability," adding that she was greatly shocked at the time.
Kim Chang-ok said, "My personality changed after that day. I stopped bringing friends home. I did not want to show or explain my father. I was too young. I didn't know how. So I acted brighter in front of friends," saying she ignored her father's disability with a child's heart.
