'Singer Hye-eun confessed the story of how she had no choice but to become the head of the household at a young age due to her father's loan guarantee.
Recently aired MBN variety show Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night featured singers Hye-eun and Jeon Young-rok, both born in 1954, who shared life stories.
That day the two also talked about how they addressed each other. Regarding Hye-eun, whose legal name is Kim Seung-joo, Jeon Young-rok said, "After worrying about how to call her, I just didn't call her name often," and Hye-eun recalled, "When it was just the two of us, we called each other 'Young-rok-ah,' 'Hye-eun-ah.'"
Hye-eun then opened up about having been on stage since childhood. She said, "I was on stage from the age of five. My father ran a musical troupe," adding, "Back then there was a variety show centered on prodigies called the baby show, and Ha Chun-hwa also participated."
But the happy childhood did not last long. Hye-eun confessed, "From my second year of high school I had to take on the role of head of the household," adding, "My father wrongly guaranteed a friend's debt, which plunged the household into hardship." She went on to say, "After settling all the debts, the money left was only 300,000 won at the time," and said, "With the help of my composer uncle I came to Seoul and barely graduated from school."
Financial hardship continued. Hye-eun calmly recounted, "Six family members lived in a one-room apartment," and said, "I worked at a nighttime establishment to make a living, and by saving a little at a time we were able to move to a bigger home."
After enduring difficult times, a turning point in life came. Hye-eun said, "One year after debuting, 'You wouldn't know' became a hit," and revealed that the first thing she did after success was, "I bought a house for my parents," which moved people.
