Shin Yeon-a, formerly of Big Mama, revealed the astonishing income she earned while working as a chorus session singer in the 1990s.
On the 10th, the first episode of KBS2's Happy Together featured Shin Yeon-a, composer Lee Hyun-jung, chorus session singer Kim Hyo-soo and other behind-the-scenes contributors to the era's hit songs.
That day, Yoon Jongshin introduced them and said "It would not be an exaggeration to say that 70–80% of 1990s songs are thanks to these people."
Shin Yeon-a, Lee Hyun-jung and Kim Hyo-soo performed at the time as the chorus team "Fill in the blanks" and participated in numerous hit songs. They worked with top-tier singers such as Wheesung's "Can't it be?", Gummy's "If you come back", Cho Yong-pil and Lee Seung-hwan, and are reported to have handled the choruses for era-defining songs such as god's "Candlelight One", Park Ji-yoon's "Coming of age ceremony", Lee Jung Hyun's "Wa", "Change", and Deux's "In the summer".
In particular, Shin Yeon-a surprised everyone by revealing that at the time her income was "When university tuition was about 1.8 million won, my nickname at my peak was 'monthly tens of millions of won'."
She said she earned about five times the monthly university tuition at the time. Shin Yeon-a recalled, "After finishing a recording, we received an envelope of cash the same day," adding, "But then we immediately had to go to the next recording, so there was no time to put it in the bank. Envelopes of cash kept piling up on my desk."
She went on to say, "Our schedule was set a month in advance," and "If a singer looked tired, there were times we recorded the chorus before the singer," conveying how busy chorus session singers were. The cast who heard this exclaimed, "Wouldn't that be like the top tier in real estate?" and "The revenue was truly enormous," and Shin Yeon-a smiled as she recalled the past.
