"Hope" Zo In-sung mentioned his experience filming with Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender.
On the 9th morning at a cafe on Samcheong-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with lead actor Zo In-sung of the film "Hope."
"Hope" (director and writer Na Hong-jin, produced by Forged Films, co-produced by Plus M Entertainment·Westworld Co., distributed by Plus M Entertainment) depicts Beom-seok (played by Hwang Jung-min), the head of the Hopohang Branch Office located in the demilitarized zone, who hears from neighborhood youths that a tiger has appeared, and as the whole village goes on alert, encounters an unbelievable reality that sets the story in motion.
Director Na Hong-jin, who rose to the rank of master with "The Chaser," "The Yellow Sea" and "The Wailing," released this new film after 10 years, and it was officially invited to compete in the selection at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, receiving much praise. As a genre film featuring creatures, it is reported to have the largest production budget in Korean film history. It is said to be at least 70 billion won, and if late-stage marketing and publicity expenses are added, it could reach as much as 100 billion won. Besides Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon, the film drew attention before release with a glamorous cast that includes Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
Zo In-sung delivered a strong performance as Seong-gi, a village youth who occupies his time with hunting and fishing. From dazzling shotgun action to a horseback riding scene he practiced for three months, his late-stage contributions stand out. From the early-year "Humint" to the summer box-office film "Hope," the forthcoming Netflix movie "Possible Love," and the new Disney+ series "Moving 2," he has been busy.
"Hope" has undergone a long wait from filming through postproduction before release, and he said, "If you wait too long, you resign yourself. Waiting in the best condition is the best choice," adding, "The director wanted to do postproduction and such as much as he could, as long as he wanted, and to release it without regret. That way, the audience will see the film in the optimal condition the director wanted."
There is also a two-shot with Michael Fassbender, who plays an alien, and he said, "When I filmed, Fassbender wasn't there, and we matched our sightlines to things like puppets. At that time, a junior actor stood in front to meet my gaze," adding, "Hollywood actors such as Michael Fassbender finished all their scenes by coming to the set. Afterwards they came onto the set to stand together once and see how it felt. We shot together with motion capture, and then did the final compositing."
Zo In-sung said that in "Hope" the early and middle parts do not stand out much, but in the late part his mad performance makes dopamine explode. "My fanbase is small, so not many people will be waiting. (laughs) Although Seong-gi wanders in the mountains, he inherits the emotions of the town. Even if I do not appear much, viewers receive emotional cues and watch the character in an anxious state. That placement was the director's choice," he said, adding, "Seong-gi at first chases and then becomes the one being chased. At the same time, it shows how humans can respond to fear, and you can see those scenes in various ways," raising expectations.
Meanwhile, "Hope" opens on the 15th.<
