Netflix's new series "Donggung" actor Roh Yoon-seo shared her thoughts on taking on her first historical drama.
On the 8th, at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, a production presentation for Netflix's new series "Donggung" (written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Ja-won, directed by Choi Jung-gyu) was held.
"Donggung" tells the story of Gu Cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who can traverse the world of ghosts (鬼), and court maid Saenggang (Roh Yoon-seo), who keeps secrets, as they answer the king's (Cho Seung-woo) summons and unravel the curse that haunts Donggung. Writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Ja-won, who have built a distinctive Korean-style occult world through works such as "Bulgasal: Immortal Souls" and "The Guest," and director Choi Jung-gyu, who demonstrated outstanding directing across genres in works such as "The Devil Judge" and "The Red Sleeve" joined forces.
Roh Yoon-seo plays Saenggang, a court maid born with the ability to hear the voices of ghosts. Considering her ability a lifelong curse, Saenggang uses it to uncover the palace's secrets alongside Gu Cheon. Roh Yoon-seo, who drew attention as a rising star by leaving an impression with roles in "Our Blues" and "Crash Course in Romance," received praise for capturing sparkling moments of youth in the Netflix films "20th Century Girl" and "Hear Me: Our Summer." Having amplified a character's charm with excellent acting and a distinctive aura, viewers are eager to see how she will portray Saenggang.
Roh Yoon-seo said, "Honestly, the historical genre and fantasy were unfamiliar to me, but just reading the story made me wonder how such a tale would be brought to life. It stimulated my imagination and was interesting," adding, "I thought the active and ambitious aspects of the character were cool, and I wondered how I could show that. It was a challenging project for me, so I felt afraid, but I chose it because I thought there was a lot to learn."
She continued, "To be honest, it was difficult because it was my first historical drama. Maintaining vocal delivery and a rigid posture was hard. At first, I wasn't used to that way, and my body stiffened, but over time it became more natural. Still, it was fun," adding, "There is a combo play with Nam Joo-hyuk. When they first meet, they are people who led different lives and have a conflicting relationship, but as time passes they come to need each other. They become indispensable to one another, and I hope people will pay close attention to that process."
Netflix's new series "Donggung" will be released on the 17th.
