Heo Jin-ho's new film, starring South Korea's leading character actors, Assassin(s) has planted its flag at the Toronto International Film Festival, one of the world's four major film festivals.
The film Assassin(s) (director Heo Jin-ho, produced by Hive media corp) has been officially invited to the 'Gala Presentations' section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which will be held from Sept. 10 to 20.
Assassin(s) is a mystery pursuit drama that tracks the suspicions and behind-the-scenes forces of the first lady shooting incident on Aug. 15, 1974, which shocked Korea.
Director Heo Jin-ho, who directed the films Dangerous Liaisons (2012) and A Normal Family (2023), has set a remarkable record by being invited to the same main section for the third time with Assassin(s).
Cameron Bailey, festival director of the Toronto International Film Festival, praised the film as a "dynamic story dealing with a shocking chapter in Korean history, told with the superb directorial skill of one of our most beloved filmmakers, Heo Jin-ho," and said the cast led by Yoo Hai Jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Minho deliver "fantastic" performances as the reason for the official invitation.
The TIFF 'Gala Presentations' section has been the main showcase for Korea's top films that combine popular appeal and artistic quality, including No Other Choice (2025), Harbin (2024), A Normal Family (2024), Concrete Utopia (2023), Smugglers (2023) and Hunt (2022).
Yoo Hai Jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Minho come together to show tense, densely layered acting synergy. Moreover, Hive media corp, which successfully brought weighty modern histories such as 12.12: The Day and The Man Standing at Namsan to the screen, produced the film, and top domestic production staff including cinematographer Im O-gae, lighting director Lee Seong-hwan, art director Kim Byung-han and VFX supervisor Chung Jae-hoon have joined forces to draw attention. It is scheduled to meet domestic audiences in theaters this year's Chuseok holiday.
