Broadcaster Hong Seok-cheon candidly revealed the reason he gave money to a past lover even after their breakup.
On the 6th, a video titled 'Hong Seok-cheon Ji Jin-hee | Republic of Korea's top two top gays and gay president' was posted on the YouTube channel 'Zzanbro'.
That day Hong Seok-cheon said, "Coming out was really the right choice for me," and said, "I tell younger gay brothers who are struggling, "Come out. It's better than dying"".
He went on to confess a difficult period when he even considered extreme measures. Hong Seok-cheon recalled, "I thought I had held on until 2007, but after a big fight with my sisters I felt like 'I don't need anything' and went to Mapo Bridge." He recalled, "I called my ex as a last sign. On the third try she answered, noticed my situation and cursed at me," adding, "Hearing that made me snort with a laugh and before I knew it dawn had come. I drank water and went to the bathroom and felt like I could live."
He added, "When I see younger people who are alive because of me, I feel my coming out was not in vain." He also mentioned that in 2004 he was named one of Time magazine's 'Asian heroes.' He said, "I was really grateful to be evaluated as someone whose four-year fight after coming out amid South Korean society's prejudice against sexual minorities could become the driving force to change society."
Afterward Shin Dong-yeob revealed, "Recently I had money extorted by my boyfriend. Even after we broke up, if he said he was in trouble I gave him money," which drew laughter. Hong Seok-cheon calmly replied, "I just thought of it as alimony," and Ji Jin-hee, who was beside him, chimed in, "You even set him up with a shop," embarrassing Hong Seok-cheon. Hong Seok-cheon laughed and said, "Be quiet," then explained, "Rather than being extorted, I think of that person as someone who made a period of my life into a beautiful memory."
He continued, "Being in the position of Hong Seok-cheon's partner was never an easy position. It was heavy and difficult, and I was grateful they endured it for two to three years." He added, "Because that person was there I didn't have other bad thoughts and could spend beautiful time. It's okay to leave when love cools. I told them to leave if they found someone good. Instead, because they had time with me, if they wanted something I helped them," he sincerely said.
