Singer and musical actress Ok Joo Hyun rekindled the past "Okjangpan" controversy and continued with strong remarks toward singers who rely on autotune, keeping her at the center of attention all day.
Ok Joo Hyun on the 6th directly mentioned the so-called "Okjangpan" incident that surfaced in 2022 through a fan communication platform. She recalled, "Ah, I burst out laughing. I had forgotten, Okjangpan," and said, "I heard the explanation that it was a post uploaded to promote a friend's father's floor mat."
Explaining the reason she filed a complaint at the time, she said, "If I did not make it clear that I was not at fault, I would have had to pay three times the penalty. In the end, I had no choice but to file the complaint to prove my innocence." She added, "What I regret most now is withdrawing the complaint," and frankly confessed, "I suffered losses in advertising, and it is sad that nicknames like 'Oxyclean' and 'oksusu' were replaced by the nickname 'Okjangpan.'"
In another fan communication message released the same day, she also revealed her views on the autotune culture. Ok Joo Hyun said, "These days, no matter how poorly someone sings, they apply autotune postproduction so heavily," and added, "From the perspective of someone who performs completely live, it does not feel good. It is something singers talk about among themselves a lot."
She went on, "Stages that were difficult to broadcast at the time of recording are leveled through postproduction," and criticized, "Skills and shortcomings should lead to growth, but that process seems to be disappearing, and it is frustrating." She did not hide her opinion, even using strong expressions such as "I don't want to sit with them," "It seems like anyone and everyone can sing," and "Those dreams should be cut off at the root."
Reactions from netizens to Ok Joo Hyun's remarks were mixed. Some sympathized, saying, "A singer who values live singing ability can certainly say that," and "It is true that excessive postproduction is a problem."
On the other hand, other netizens expressed regret, saying, "I agree with the intent, but expressions like 'I don't want to sit with them' and 'anyone and everyone' were too harsh," "Even correct points can be received differently depending on the way they are expressed," and "As an era that uses technology, various perspectives are also needed."
Ok Joo Hyun's remarks have sparked debate online, with evaluations that they showed sincerity and conviction about music while others felt the level of expression was regrettable regardless of the message's intent.
