Voice actress the late Kang Hee-seon is laid to rest.
This morning (6) at 7:40 a.m., the funeral procession for the late Kang Hee-seon will be held at the St. Mary's Hospital funeral hall in Seoul. The burial site is Yongin Park Honor Stone.
The late Kang Hee-seon, who debuted in 1979 as a KBS class 15 public recruitment voice actor, was loved as a representative Korean voice actress for more than 40 years, breathing life into countless characters. She left a deep impression by voicing Bong Mi-sun and Maeng-gu in the animation "Crayon Shin-chan," Sailor Venus in "Sailor Moon," Lady Eboshi in "Princess Mononoke," and Hera in "Olympus Guardian." She was especially familiar as the regular Korean dub voice for actress Sharon Stone and as the voice of subway announcements, making her voice beloved by people of all ages.
However, last August news that the voice actors for Bong Mi-sun and Maeng-gu in "Crayon Shin-chan" had been replaced sparked fans' curiosity. At the time, the production team said it was for "personal reasons," but later Kang Hee-seon personally confessed it was due to health issues.
She calmly revealed on her YouTube channel in 2023 that her 2021 colon cancer had metastasized to her liver, and she had undergone surgery and chemotherapy, and that she had once been given a two-year terminal prognosis. Later, on tvN's You Quiz on the Block in 2024 she said, "Colon cancer was found in a health screening and it metastasized to the liver. It metastasized to 17 places, and I received chemotherapy 47 times," and confessed, "Since then I have lived with the thought that today might always be the last," receiving much support from many people.
Even while battling illness, the late guarded the recording studio. She said, "After recording a four-hour "Crayon Shin-chan" movie session I would be unable to get up for four days because I was so exhausted," yet added, "If I had not had this work, I don't know what would have kept me going. I really love the job of voice acting, and I loved Shin-chan's mother so much that I was able to endure," which moved many.
After leaving projects due to cancer treatment, the late Kang Hee-seon had expressed her intention to return to the microphone whenever she recovered her health. However, she ultimately did not realize her dream of returning, and her sudden death plunged fans and colleagues into deep sorrow.
