RESCENE member Woni's dialect controversy sparked debate even with an MBC producer.
RESCENE leader Woni recently uploaded a video to her personal YouTube channel 안녕하세요 원이입니다 잘부탁드립니다 documenting a visit to the hometown house of Japanese member Minami. In the video, Woni, walking through a dark house with the lights off to find Minami's younger sibling's room, responded to the producer's remark "무섭노" by echoing "무섭노, 조명부터 무서운데".
Opinions clashed over whether Woni's remark was a Gyeongnam regional dialect or an ilbe-like expression. Kim Hyun-ji, a producer at MBC Gyeongnam, also mentioned it. Kim Hyun-ji directed the documentary film A Person Kimjangha.
On the 1st, she posted on her personal social media about the YouTube clip, saying, "I was upset because the female idol and the producer were exchanging 'no no' so amicably in the YouTube clip." She pointed out that Woni's remark was not simply a Gyeongnam regional dialect but an ilbe-style expression.
Kim Hyun-ji especially explained, "Researchers of Gyeongsang speech have repeatedly pointed out that its usage does not conform to grammatical norms, yet young people naturally use the ungrammatical 'no'. I feel more alarmed because I do not think they intentionally used it with ilbe-style thinking."
She also emphasized, "I am not saying all users should be labeled ilbe or that dialects should be censored. Choosing how to respond when you realize an expression has roots in hateful language is a matter of attitude. As speakers of Gyeongsang speech, I hope you will reflect once more."
Woni of RESCENE recently gained great popularity on social media as the "Geoje girl." Riding that momentum, RESCENE's song "LOVE ATTACK" has also been much loved, increasing their popularity. <
