Former baseball player Choo Shin-soo's wife Ha Won-mi confessed she had suffered a loss of self-esteem despite her husband's annual salary in the 100 billion won range.
On the April 4 broadcast of MBN's talk show Sokpuli Show Dongchimi (abbreviated Dongchimi), Ha Won-mi appeared as a guest. On Dongchimi, Ha Won-mi opened up, saying, "For 23 years I fought with the phrase 'you married well.'"
On Dongchimi she had to hear the words "you married well." Panelist Choi Hong-rim abruptly said those words. Choi Hong-rim explained his reasoning, saying, "From our perspective, one might think, 'What is lacking if she is Choo Shin-soo's wife?,'" and MC Kim Yong Man also mentioned Choo Shin-soo's active-player salary, chiming in, "It exceeds 100 billion won."
But for Ha Won-mi that was the thing she hated most. She said, "I have been married 23 years. For 23 years I lived only as 'Choo Shin-soo's wife,' and now I work as a pilates instructor. I work back and forth between the United States and Korea," adding, "You can say that. It's not that we lack money, so why would I go and do something like that? But I really wanted to find myself. I wanted to try living as Ha Won-mi."
In fact, Ha Won-mi met Choo Shin-soo in her early twenties when she was only a sophomore in college and stayed with him since his minor league days. Recalling enduring pregnancy and supporting him in the United States at a young age, she said, "My husband was sometimes away on road trips for ten days. Then I was alone with the child," and "When I had the second child, I once drove myself home 24 hours after delivery. I prepared to be discharged right after giving birth. At the hospital they asked, 'Where is the guardian?'" which evoked sympathy.
Afterward, Ha Won-mi gave birth to three children, two sons and a daughter, with Choo Shin-soo and devoted herself to supporting him and life in the United States as the wife of a successful major league baseball player. After her husband retired, she began to find her own life.
Even as a pilates instructor in the United States, Ha Won-mi could not completely stand apart as 'Choo Shin-soo's wife.' She joked, "I ended up with a difficult elderly member who could have put me on a blacklist. That person suddenly looked at my ring and said, 'Your ring is very pretty. What does your husband do? Is he a doctor?' When I said he was a baseball player and that my husband was Choo Shin-soo, she turned out to be a big fan. The grandmother asked, 'Why are you here?' After that, she was no longer a blacklist member."
Leaving her husband's shadow behind, Ha Won-mi now dreams of her own life running YouTube and social media accounts and working as a pilates instructor. Her confession about the anguish that even a 100 billion won annual salary could not hide drew viewers' attention on Dongchimi.
