Actor Han Jeong-soo threw a heavy fastball at the controversy over regional denigration and historical mockery that occurred at a high school baseball tournament. He strongly criticized the hate culture of a specific far-right-leaning community that has deeply infiltrated the daily lives of people in their teens and 20s and called for social awakening.
On the 2nd, Han Jeong-soo posted an image on his social media containing the message, "Let us completely eliminate Ilbe (Ilgan Best), which spreads to children a distorted sense of history and a play culture of contempt and mockery, from this land." Along with it, he added the comment, "The real culprit of the Baejaego incident. Soon Ilbe hired thugs will come crashing in."
This was not his first principled remark. Earlier, on the 30th of last month, Han Jeong-soo also wrote, "This Baejaego incident is not simply a problem of children," adding, "The Ilbe-style historical mockery and hate that have spread in the daily lives of people in their teens and 20s are severely damaging the country," offering harsh criticism.
Behind Han Jeong-soo's anger lies a shocking controversy that occurred during a recent high school baseball game. On the 29th of last month, during the 81st Cheongryong National High School Baseball Championship held at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul, in the game between Baejae High School and Gwangju Jeil High School, some Baejae players chanted toward the opposing team's dugout, "Go, go, go to Starbucks," causing an uproar.
The chant drew heavy criticism because it evoked a recent Starbucks Korea marketing event that was fiercely criticized for distorting and belittling the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. Earlier, on the 18th of last month, Starbucks ran a tumbler sales event that used phrases such as "Tank Day" and "desk knock," which were accused of mocking the May 18 Democratization Movement and ridiculing the torture death of the late activist Park Jong-chul, earning intense backlash.
