Director Jang Hang-jun revealed behind-the-scenes details that he initially refused the film The King's Warden.
On the 3rd broadcast, KBS2 Problem Child in House featured director Jang Hang-jun, who shared production stories of the hit film The King's Warden.
That day Yoon Jongshin said, 'You became a master director with The King's Warden,' and joked, 'When I had 6 million viewers I used the term "budget master." At that time my face looked the best,' drawing laughter.
In response, Jang Hang-jun revealed the unexpected fact that 'The King's Warden' is his seventh work. He said, 'Actually at first the production company sent the script and I thought "I can't do this,"' and added, 'When I went out to refuse, I explained why I couldn't do it.'
Jang Hang-jun cited the burden of a historical drama's box office as the first reason. He explained, 'At that time it wasn't easy to invest in Korean films, and historical dramas were a particularly difficult genre to succeed in,' and added, 'Previously there were many works centered on spectacular stories like Prince Suyang.'
He went on, 'On the other hand, the story from Danjong's dethronement to his death has relatively weak dramatic elements, and because it is fixed as a sad ending I judged it would be hard to get investment.'
However, proposing revision directions for the work at the refusal meeting actually changed the situation. Jang Hang-jun recalled, 'Instead, when I said that if someone else were directing these parts should be fixed, the production team said "that's great" and based on that revision they persuaded me even more strongly.'
After pondering until the end, he went home and consulted his wife, writer Kim Eun-hee. Jang Hang-jun said, 'At home I said, "How about fixing it like this?" and my wife said, "That would be fine. Try it,"' and revealed, 'When the successful writer Kim Eun-hee told me to do it, my hesitation ended,' bringing laughter.
