Director-actor Koo Kyo-hwan expressed a desire to cast Jun Ji-hyun.
On the afternoon of the 28th, at a café in Palpan-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview with Koo Kyo-hwan, actor in the film Colony (director Yeon Sang-ho), was held.
Colony is about isolated survivors inside a building sealed off by an unidentified infectious outbreak confronting infected people who evolve into unpredictable forms, and it opened on May 21.
Koo Kyo-hwan plays Seo Young-cheol, a biology doctor who caused the infectious outbreak. Seo Young-cheol is a character who creates an unidentified virus and spreads it throughout the Doongwoo Building, and he becomes a target of the authorities and survivors after reporting in advance that his body contains the vaccine.
That day Koo Kyo-hwan responded to the reaction that his chemistry with Jun Ji-hyun in Colony has been a hot topic on social media by saying, "Because things that happen in reality look at each other, I try to share funny jokes and happy imaginations. In that sense, senior Jun Ji-hyun seemed to feel deeply moved. When we gather like this, both of us enjoy the atmosphere, we seem to like humor. We spit out humor as if competing with each other."
He then recalled how he became close to Jun Ji-hyun, saying, "When I think about how we became close, it feels like there was no process. When you enter school you get assigned a class and take a scan once, right? When the first meeting happened, putting Jun Ji-hyun's name value aside, somehow I thought this friend might be my partner in a one-two punch of humor. I thought we could make this set fun. The two of us could be a strength for everyone."
When asked to evaluate Jun Ji-hyun's sense of humor, he said, "It's not about quick wit and creativity or telling prepared stories. There are exactly three people like that: Yeon Sang-ho, Jun Ji-hyun, and Koo Kyo-hwan. Senior Ji-hyun is the funniest."
Meanwhile, Jun Ji-hyun has described Koo Kyo-hwan as like a "younger sister." In response, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "To me she's just my best friend on set, a classmate, a cheerleader. She gives good energy. She also gives ideas."
Koo Kyo-hwan then asked, "Is my villain acting in Colony well captured?" and added, "If it is done well, looking for the reason, when people are close the villain relationship seems more visible. The villain doesn't come out of hatred; in the end, because the two people's emotional choreography shares tastes, the adversarial relationship also has synergy."
When asked whether he would cast Jun Ji-hyun in his next work as a director, he said, "It's not desire but conviction. I do want that. I actually have a script. There is a script with director Yeon Sang-ho, and there is a script with Jun Ji-hyun."
Koo Kyo-hwan also laughed, "I won't show it until I've written it perfectly. If I talk about it now, people will ask, 'When is it coming out?' Later they'll say, 'Oh, that was it.' This is my dream and hope. Please make sure to state that. It's the Seodong-yogi method."
Meanwhile, the film Colony, in which Koo Kyo-hwan appears, opened on May 21.
