Actor Koo Kyo-hwan spoke directly about the "cardigan hugging scene" that sparked debate in We Are All Trying Here.
On the afternoon of the 28th, an interview with Koo Kyo-hwan, an actor in the film Colony (directed by Yeon Sang-ho), was held at a cafe in Palpan-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Colony is about survivors trapped in a building sealed off by an unidentified infectious outbreak who confront infected people who evolve into unpredictable forms; it opened on the 21st.
Koo Kyo-hwan plays Seoyoung-cheol, a biology doctorate who caused the infection. Seoyoung-cheol is the character who created an unidentified virus and spread it through the Woonguri building, and because he reported in advance that there is a vaccine in his body, he becomes a target of the authorities and the survivors.
Before Colony, Koo Kyo-hwan appeared in the film If by Chance and the drama We Are All Trying Here and achieved box office success. In particular, We Are All Trying Here was even praised by many viewers as a life-defining drama.
About We Are All Trying Here, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "If you watch We Are All Trying Here, it might feel cinematic, but it's talking about relationships. I think I acted while thinking about the relationship between Kyung-se and Dong-man and the relationships with the seniors."
When asked how it felt to play Hwang Dong-man's life, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "It felt like realizing a work that already had an original by writer Park Hae-young. Like acting out a Marvel comic, I thought I was selected to realize a series work within the Park Hae-young universe as Hwang Dong-man. I acted with that in mind. Today's emotional state is overwhelmed, neon green. Green," he said, prompting laughter.
When asked whether he actually has a friend like Park Kyung-se (played by Oh Jung-se) in We Are All Trying Here, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "I wish I did, but I don't. That kind of relationship seems to develop both people, but it doesn't exist."
Meanwhile, some scenes in We Are All Trying Here have sparked heated debate. In particular, the scene in which Go Youn-jung (playing Byeon Eun-ah) puts Koo Kyo-hwan (playing Hwang Dong-man) inside her cardigan and holds him in her arms was pointed out by some as uncomfortable because it seemed to resolve a romantic relationship between a man and a woman through a maternal code.
Regarding this, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "That's the same. It's a scene moved from some original. Even in Colony there are a lot of people saying they want to beat Seoyoung-cheol; that desire to want to beat him belongs to the audience," and added, "My interpretation of the cardigan scene's reception is not important. I present that to the audience, and the reception is also the audience's. I think everyone's interpretation is valid."
Meanwhile, the film Colony, in which Koo Kyo-hwan appears, opened on the 21st.
