Actor Koo Kyo-hwan said he hopes to collaborate with director Yeon Sang-ho again.
On the 28th afternoon at a cafe in Palpan-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview with actor Koo Kyo-hwan for the film "Colony" (director Yeon Sang-ho) was held.
"Colony" is about survivors trapped inside a building sealed off by an unidentified infectious outbreak who confront infected people evolving into unpredictable forms, and it was released on May 21.
Koo Kyo-hwan plays Seoyoung-cheol, a biology doctor who caused the outbreak. Seoyoung-cheol is a character who created an unidentified virus and spread it throughout the Doongwori Building, and he becomes a target of the authorities and survivors after reporting in advance that he has a vaccine in his body.
Earlier, director Yeon Sang-ho praised Koo Kyo-hwan as "an actor who changed the paradigm of acting in Korean cinema." When asked whether he agreed, Koo Kyo-hwan modestly replied, "Sometimes he makes comments like that. Rather than agree, I have never approached acting with the thought of changing a paradigm, so these days my mindset is to enjoy the moment. Whether Dong-man or Yeong-cheol, I want to enjoy the interpretations of these characters."
He continued, "I think all acting is interactive. If there is a difference, Seoyoung-cheol and Hwang Dong-man have different ways of speaking, and as an actor I research them and want to give that to the audience as a gift. Ultimately, rather than trying to change a paradigm, I hope to do work I enjoy, work that is fun."
Rather, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "The director is changing the paradigm of Korean film. He is gradually expanding his universe. Calling it a MacGuffin is too grand, but I feel he is linking sources. To vary things means that Colony and Peninsula are the same Mr. Seo but different characters. The director seems to enjoy this work, and the switching works well."
Koo Kyo-hwan has already filmed three works with director Yeon Sang-ho: Peninsula, Parasite, and Colony. What does Yeon Sang-ho mean to his acting career? Koo Kyo-hwan said, "I haven't lived my whole life yet, but I hope we're doing the same work even 10 years from now. I hope I'm still on director Yeon Sang-ho's casting board as the years go by."
When asked whether he also looked forward to collaborating as creators rather than actor and director, Koo Kyo-hwan said, "These days we slowly make that kind of joke. We hand synopses to each other like a joke, and it seems that a single piece of content doesn't get completed just because both sides like it. Several miracles are needed to complete it, but someday I want to have director Yeon Sang-ho appear in my film."
Then Koo Kyo-hwan joked, "The director acts well, but I don't know if he has ticket power," and added, "I hope for collaborations where director Yeon Sang-ho appears, or I direct something written by director Yeon Sang-ho, and I always dream of that."
Meanwhile, the film "Colony," in which Koo Kyo-hwan appears, was released on May 21.
