Broadcaster Cho Hye-lyeon opened up about a past hurt from her mother's discrimination between daughters and sons.
On the 27th, the His Days channel uploaded a video titled "A day I want to hear SPECIAL "Choi Bok-soon" (special 3)".
In the video, Cho Hye-lyeon had an honest conversation with her mother, Choi Bok-soon. Choi Bok-soon recalled having lost her parents at an early age, and Cho Hye-lyeon said, "You must have been lonely," and expressed sympathy.
Later, Choi Bok-soon, who said she married at 20, said, "I did too much farming and my back hurt from then on," and recounted a difficult life as a daughter-in-law. Cho Hye-lyeon revealed, "And when I gave birth, because I was a daughter they repeatedly refused to give me postpartum care," shocking listeners.
Moreover, Cho Hye-lyeon is one of eight siblings, and Choi Bok-soon said she was forced to give birth for more than 10 years starting at 21. Cho Hye-lyeon also revealed a behind-the-scenes story: "When I was born my head was big so they said I bled a lot."
Choi Bok-soon said, "As for why I kept having more children, my body swelled and even though I bled profusely they made me get up to cook and wash the laundry. My wrist hurt so much that if I didn't put on a pain relief patch it would be too painful to get by," she confessed.
In response, Cho Hye-lyeon said, "That was how it was then. The preference for sons was no joke," referring to the era that pressured families to have sons. It was only by the eighth child that they had a son, Cho Ji-hwan (real name Cho Min-jun).
Cho Hye-lyeon said, "So Cho Ji-hwan meant everything to my mother. Hearing it now I can understand, but I couldn't understand my mother then: no matter how much money I brought home, no matter what I did, her mind was filled only with her son. Even when we went on a trip to Laos she confessed to me, 'It would have been so nice if I had come with my son,' and that hurt me," she candidly shared.
She said, "Even after I became an entertainer and brought in money, my mother gave it all to Cho Ji-hwan, and her mind was filled with Cho Ji-hwan. If something happened to Cho Ji-hwan she would die for him; if Cho Ji-hwan said he was losing weight, she would say, 'Then I should exercise too.' It became like that. I did a broadcast with Dr. Oh Eun-young and we talked about this. Then I realized that the only reason my mother lived was Cho Ji-hwan," saying she belatedly came to understand her mother's pain.
