Actor Kwak Sun-young once again demonstrated her strength as an actor through the well-made thriller "The Scarecrow." The drama concluded spectacularly, recording ENA's second-highest viewership in history, and a candid Q&A directly delivered by Kwak Sun-young was released.
In the ENA Monday-Tuesday drama "The Scarecrow" (writer Lee Ji-hyun, director Park Jun-woo), which ended on the 26th, Kwak Sun-young gave a passionate performance as Kang Seong-il Daily reporter Seo Ji-won, who pursues the truth. She anchored the story firmly at its center amid taut tension by portraying realistic everyday acting unique to her and delicately描绘ing the complex emotional line that shifted moment by moment.
In particular, when portraying Seo Ji-won in 2019, 30 years later, she convincingly captured the character's change with a deeper voice and gaze that conveyed the weight of the years. Also, when faced with the brutal truth that the real culprit was long-time friend Lee Ki-hwan (played by Jung Moon-sung), she densely depicted emotions collapsing before betrayal, confusion and an unbelievable reality.
"The Scarecrow" left a brilliant record as ENA's highest-rated Monday-Tuesday drama and ENA's second-highest viewership in history. In response, Kwak Sun-young said, "I was genuinely happy and grateful to receive so much interest and love," adding, "I felt really sad every time filming ended last summer, and after airing I felt a different kind of sadness every time an episode ended. I thank the viewers who cried and laughed with the people of Kangseong in those days."
She cited the on-site verification scene of Im Seok-man, who had suffered unjust imprisonment, as the most memorable moment. She said, "A scene that showed the unjust faces created by people who believed what they saw was the truth," and added, "It is a heartbreaking scene that showed the faces of an era when no one could view things from a third-party perspective, and it remains deeply in my heart," reflecting on the work's weighty message.
The chemistry with fellow actors, including Park Hae-soo and Jung Moon-sung, who teamed up as alumni, as well as Lee Heejun, Lee Seok-hyung and Seo Ji-hye, also shone. Kwak Sun-young said, "I was happy to work with good actors and good people," adding, "The story was brutal and difficult, but the set was sometimes filled with laughter and at times with an atmosphere so dense that even breathing felt careful. We approached it with hearts as hot as midsummer heat," expressing tender affection for the staff and colleagues.
Finally, Kwak Sun-young imagined Seo Ji-won's future, saying, "She will probably continue to reveal the truth about the people of Kangseong. She will still be protecting her friendship with Tae-ju and remain good friends," and confessed earnestly that this work felt "like a time I actually lived through. Something hot and stirring has taken root in my heart."
