(continuing from interview ②) director Son Jae-gon of the film "Wild Sing" praised and revealed the casting story of actress Park Ji-hyun.
Director Son Jae-gon conducted an interview on the morning of the 28th at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. At the meeting he spoke with domestic reporters about the new film "Wild Sing."
"Wild Sing," which opens on June 3, is a comedy about a three-member mixed dance group called "Triangle" that once swept the music scene but was caught up in an unexpected incident and disbanded overnight, and now makes a reckless attempt to seize a comeback opportunity 20 years later. It is a new work from the production company of "Extreme Job," the comedy that thrilled some 16.26 million viewers in 2019, and director Son Jae-gon took the helm.
In particular, "Wild Sing" has attracted attention as actors Gang Dong-won, Park Ji-hyun and Um Tae-goo respectively play Triangle members Hyun Woo, Do-mi and Sang-gu, preparing by practicing actual dancing and singing. Among them, Park Ji-hyun notably shone as the only female member and center, Do-mi. How did the casting process go?
Director Son Jae-gon said, "If possible, when making casting combinations I don't strictly separate them logically, but I thought a fresh face might be needed. However, because of the character setting it wasn't easy to cast someone too young. So I thought it would be good to have an actor who is not twenty but not forty either. Thinking that we needed a somewhat new face, she was one of the most eye-catching actors around that time," revealing the casting story of Park Ji-hyun.
He also said of Park Ji-hyun, "I had heard her image was a bit mature, but even at the first meeting she seemed like a student. On screen she wasn't like that. She seemed to have an actor's presence. When we were doing postproduction, it was when we were doing the Netflix "You and Everything Else." But she doesn't see herself as an actor," he noted.
He went on, "She doesn't know how to strike a pose, she doesn't know how to act weighty, she doesn't know how to dress up. She's mentally healthy. At no moment does she shrink back or put on airs or hesitate. That aspect makes "Wild Sing" a work different from her previous image, and while actors often don't have many different images, at least she has contrasting images, which I think is a major strength as an actor."
