The over-the-top streaming service (OTT) Wavve is expanding its lineup of BL (Boys Love) drama genre titles, which boast strong fandoms, to more precisely target users' tastes.
Wavve said it will sequentially release four new webdramas, produced by KT Studio Gini and executive produced by Oak Company, exclusively from June through Dec. Following the Korea-Thailand joint SF romantic comedy "Space Bakery" released in April, it plans to broaden its range of romance series with varied tones including "A prosecutor's office proposal," "Summer season," "Sugar cube sound," and "Winter season."
The work that opens the second-half lineup is "A prosecutor's office proposal," scheduled to air in June.
The story is an office romance-investigation about Lee Chae-ha, who has been plagued her whole life by the label "son of a murderer," being assigned as an investigator in a prosecutor's office and falling in love with Prosecutor Joo Tae-seon, whom she has long admired. Director Yang Kyung-hee, who won genre fans' strong love with works such as "When your temperature touches my fingertips" and "Secret relationship," directed the project. Actor Kim Yoon-sik, of the dramas I Am A Running Mate and Twenty Five Twenty One, plays Prosecutor Joo Tae-seon, and Park Si-woo of Wavve's "Thundercloud Rain and Wind" plays investigator Lee Chae-ha, presenting fresh chemistry.
Then in Aug. the series "Summer season," which has reigned as a steady seller in the web novel BL category for over a year, will be unveiled as a series.
"Summer season" is a secretive, fresh school story that unfolds when Cha Do-hyun, a childhood friend who has never been apart from the protagonist in 19 years, finally confesses feelings he had been hiding. Director Bae Yoon-seo, who was recognized for fresh direction through "Sweetheart Service," directs to bring the original's thrills to live action.
In Oct., the music romance "Sugar cube sound," centered on an idol band, takes the baton. The story follows Lee Han-yul, who falls for Herot, the vocalist of an idol group who was unusually kind to him, and witnesses one day a shocking incident caused by Herot and his friends, leading to an unpredictable tale. Various musical elements are expected to heighten the drama's immersion.
The Dec. new release that will close out the year is "Winter season." The work is based on the mega-hit original of the same name that ranked No. 1 on the web novel best list of the country's largest portal site. It draws attention as a series that connects with the universe of the earlier Aug. work "Summer season." It depicts the tense romance that unfolds when Seung-hyuk and Lee-hyun, reunited nine years after "that incident," become entangled as debtor and creditor. Director Lee Son-eum of "Gray Current" directed the project.
This lineup was executive produced by Oak Company, which has built genre expertise and stable production capabilities by sequentially presenting BL dramas based on original IPs such as "Heart Stain," "Valet Tactics," and "Thundercloud Rain and Wind."
