Yeon Sang-ho's new film "Gunchae" has swept not only domestically but also global theaters.
Proved its global buzz with presales to 124 countries, "Gunchae" (director Yeon Sang-ho, distributor/producer ㈜SHOWBOX, produced by Wowpoint·Smilegate, co-produced by Midnight Studio) opened in Malaysia on May 22 and quickly dominated local theaters. As of the 25th, it earned an impressive MYR 7,000,000 in revenue.
Above all, on the third day after release, May 24, it surpassed MYR 5,750,000, demonstrating firepower that instantly toppled the final box office of the 2024 mega-hit film "Exhuma" (MYR 5,500,000).
With this, director Yeon Sang-ho set an unprecedented record by filling Malaysia's all-time top three Korean film box office spots with his own directed works. Currently, the No. 1 and No. 2 Korean film box office in Malaysia are "Gunchae" along with Yeon Sang-ho's films that build his zombie universe: "Train to Busan" (MYR 21,500,000) and "Peninsula" (MYR 10,500,000).
"Gunchae" is a complex thriller action film in which survivors trapped inside a building completely sealed off by an unidentified infection fight for survival against mysterious infected who evolve into unpredictable forms.
With Yeon Sang-ho's distinctive dystopian worldview reaching its peak, Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Changwook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock, and Go Soo—actors who combine acting ability and star power—assembled to create spectacular synergy.
After being officially invited to the midnight screening section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, it was consecutively invited to the Sydney Film Festival and the Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival to be held in June. It was also selected as the glamorous "opening film" of the New York Asian Film Festival to be held in July, and with an invitation to the Fantasia International Film Festival confirmed, it solidified its influence in the global market.
