History distortion controversy has led to fierce criticism and even calls for the cancellation of the drama Perfect Crown, and coincidentally a scene from another drama is receiving renewed attention.
On the 22nd My Royal Nemesis aired a scene in which Shin Seo-ri (Lim Ji-yeon), who was sent to a historical drama set, pointed out historical inaccuracies.
In the drama, Shin Seo-ri looked at the queen's and palace women's costumes and asked, "Why is the queen's hair like that and why are the minions wearing fake hair in groups?" and raised the question, "During the Anjong era there was clearly an order banning gache." She then said firmly, "Shouldn't historical verification be done properly?" but on set this was dismissed as nothing important.
It could have passed as a simple comic scene, but coupled with the recent controversy surrounding Perfect Crown, it is attracting attention at an unexpected moment.
Currently Perfect Crown continues to face history distortion controversy even after its conclusion. In particular, the gu-ryu menryugwan that appeared in the 11th episode's enthronement scene and the "cheonse cheonse cheoncheonse" coral scene became the center of the controversy. Some pointed out that the direction could be exploited by China's Northeast Project logic, and the related scenes were ultimately reedited and removed.
Above all, the controversy has grown not simply because of the "fantasy historical drama" setting. Even in a fictional world, the moment historical symbols and real historical elements are borrowed, the weight that viewers perceive inevitably changes, critics say.
Online reactions include, "Fantasy is the realm of imagination, but that doesn't mean you can change history at will," "Creation and distortion are different," and "One small setting can unintentionally provide grounds for different interpretations."
That is also why the line in My Royal Nemesis, "Shouldn't historical verification be done properly?", is being mentioned again. The controversy raises the question once more of how far to allow the genre freedom of fantasy versus historical responsibility.
