An inappropriate word was used even on public broadcasting. The production team bowed and made the video private.
On the 27th KBS Entertain: Kkalkkal TV said on its YouTube channel board, "We apologize for causing great concern to viewers due to a subtitle typo in the video uploaded on the 26th."
Earlier, the channel included footage of Shim Hyung-rae and others appearing on KBS2's 'Happy Together Season 2' tray karaoke broadcast in October 2002. At the time Shim Hyung-rae shared an anecdote from his military days and said, "I imitated the 'Hulk' with two faces very well," and demonstrated it himself.
The problem was the video's thumbnail. A large caption reading "Shim Hyung-rae-style tank imitation" was inserted over Shim Hyung-rae imitating the 'Hulk,' and the video title even read "Shim Hyung-rae who almost had to be taken to the hospital after imitating a tank in front of the captain."
Recently Starbucks Korea sold the 'tank tumbler series' through its application on May 18 and used phrases such as "tank day" and "plunk on the desk!", sparking controversy. Numerous netizens and civic groups pointed out that it evoked the deployment of armored tanks by martial law troops during the May 18 pro-democracy movement and the 1987 torture death of Park Jong-chul, and Starbucks Korea deleted the related posts. Shinsegae Chung Yong-jin also promised to prevent recurrence, saying, "It was an inappropriate marketing that should not have happened and cannot be tolerated."
Despite the continued controversy, Chung Yong-jin apologized to the public on the 26th, saying, "We will fundamentally re-examine our internal systems and risk management framework and raise our standards for social responsibility. We will start over from the beginning to create real change through actions, not words, and regain the trust of the public."
Meanwhile, public broadcaster KBS provoked controversy by using the word 'tank' on its YouTube channel. After internet users pointed this out, the channel said, "In the video, a subtitle that should have read 'Hulk' in context was mistakenly written as 'tank' due to the producer's carelessness and insufficient review by the manager, and it was uploaded; we failed to detect this in the production and review process beforehand. Afterward, the production team immediately made the video private upon recognizing the problem."
It added, "The production team currently recognizes the seriousness of this matter and is conducting a full review of the content review process. We will also thoroughly reinforce the management system to prevent recurrence. As a public broadcaster's digital channel, we will take greater responsibility and carefully check even a single subtitle or a single subtitle character. We sincerely apologize once again to viewers who felt discomfort and hurt from this incident."
