Mun Ka-young, who won the Baeksang best actress award for Once We Were Us, returns with a powerful female-centered story through director Min Yong-geun's new film Two Pieces.
On the 26th, OSEN exclusively reported that Mun Ka-young's new film Two Pieces (directed by Min Yong-geun) grants news of her involvement. Mun Ka-young's side said "She has been offered Two Pieces and is reviewing it."
Two Pieces is a work that deals with a dramatic story centered on two women racing toward catastrophe, and is the new film by director Min Yong-geun, who was praised for Hyehwa, Dong in 2011. It is the director's first film in three years since Soulmate, released in 2023, and film industry insiders expect it to be a female-centered work led by a strong two-top cast.
Moreover, Two Pieces is one of the projects selected for production support announced this year by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). Two Pieces, which was confirmed to receive a total of 1.6 billion won in support, was decided to receive the largest subsidy among midbudget films planning production costs of up to 10 billion won. That seems to reflect firm confidence from the relevant ministries in the work's artistic value.
Among them, Mun Ka-young is expected to take one of the two lead roles and carry the story. In particular, she drew praise for playing the female lead Jeong-won in Once We Were Us, which was released late last year. She is expected to continue her screen activities through Two Pieces.
Once We Were Us is a Korean remake of the 2018 Chinese film Far into the Future, and it drew about 2.6 million viewers in the first half of this year. With a break-even point of about 1.1 million viewers, it received more than double that number, showing great popularity. Afterward, The King's Warden, which sparked a phenomenon by surpassing 16 million viewers, and Salmokji: Whispering Water, which set a new record for the largest audience for a Korean horror film by surpassing 3.1 million viewers, also appeared. Korean film box-office success has continued since Once We Were Us.
Above all, Mun Ka-young won the best actress award in the film category at the Baeksang Arts Awards recently, boosted by her powerful performance in Once We Were Us. Even just among the nominees were strong contenders such as Ko A Sung for Pavane, Son Ye-jin for No Other Choice, Lee Hae young for The Old Woman with the Knife, and Han Ye-ri for Spring Night. Amid reactions that any of them could have won, Mun Ka-young's win drew broadly accepted reactions and convinced the public even after the award.
Expectations have also built for Mun Ka-young's next projects. Mun Ka-young has already confirmed she will appear in next year's tvN drama Whale Star and is currently filming. Whale Star, adapted from the popular webtoon of the same name, is a drama that depicts a man who devoted everything to the motherland and a woman who risks her life to protect him against the backdrop of the anti-Japanese movement during the Japanese colonial period. The drama is expected to highlight Mun Ka-young's performance between actors Choi Wooshik and Heo Nam-jun.
In addition, Mun Ka-young continues a busy schedule by confirming Two Pieces as her next film project. Since debuting as a child actor in the 2006 film The Grace of a Teacher, Mun Ka-young made a strong impression as an adult actor with the role "Red" in the 2016 SBS drama Jealousy Incarnate 10 years after her debut. Since then, Mun Ka-young, who has enjoyed great popularity in dramas such as My Dearest Nemesis, True Beauty, The Interest of Love, Delightfully Deceitful, My Dearest Nemesis, Law and The City, and the film Once We Were Us, draws further attention for what she will show in Two Pieces.
In addition, she is reportedly in talks to join new agency Fantagio. Since Fantagio said it was "positively reviewing" reports of Mun Ka-young's move, Two Pieces is expected to be her first project after the transfer. <
