"Doctor on the Edge" newcomer Shin Ye Eun shared her thoughts on working with Lee Jae-wook.
On the 26th, at The Saint in Sindorim-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul, a press conference was held for ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama "Doctor on the Edge" (written by Kim Ji-soo, directed by Lee Myung-woo, planned by KT Studio Genie, produced by The Studio M).
Doctor on the Edge is a medical human romance about public health doctor Do Ji-eui (Lee Jae-wook), who arrives on the notoriously avoided island "Pyeondongdo," and the secretive nurse Yook Ha-ri (Shin Ye Eun). Based on the popular webtoon Jonbeo Doctor (writer Kim Tae-pung), which is serializing on KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon, the drama Doctor on the Edge raises expectations about what fresh thrills and emotional lines director Lee Myung-woo—known for his rhythmic direction and sense of humor in Boyhood and The Fiery Priest—will create when he tackles the romance genre.
Shin Ye Eun passionately plays Yook Ha-ri, a bold and affectionate nurse who returns to her hometown Pyeondongdo. Hiding unseen wounds, Yook Ha-ri faces life dilemmas on Pyeonddo and undergoes dynamic emotional changes. She is expected to add a colorful performance ranging from lovable energy to hidden secrets.
Shin Ye Eun said, "I think the lovable parts are very similar to me. If someone is trapped in pain, she is the kind of nosy character who is the first to step forward; director Lee Myung-woo was the person who gave me my first audition when I debuted, and since then I wanted to be part of his work. We finally met, and the project is so fun, and not only the actors but the characters feel alive, so I joined."
She added, "Before starting this project, at a meal with the director he saw me and said, 'Ha-ri can just be herself,' which helped and gave me confidence. I didn't try to express loveliness through any gestures or expressions; I wanted to create a natural atmosphere. I haven't watched everything to see if it was well expressed, but I think it came out enough."
In particular, Shin Ye Eun said, "When you see Yook Ha-ri, you want to cheer for her for no reason, you feel pity for her, and you want to give her love, and I tried to express those aspects well."
Regarding her chemistry with Lee Jae-wook, Shin Ye Eun explained, "I always thought we'd meet sometime. We're the same age and I've watched many of Lee Jae-wook's works, and I thought that as same-age colleagues joining together there would be an energy that makes things comfortable, but because we're the same age I treated him more carefully. If we become too close it could interfere with the work."
Meanwhile, ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama Doctor on the Edge will premiere at 10 p.m. on June 1 on ENA and will also be available on KT Genie TV and Disney Plus.
