The film "Gunche" (director Yeon Sang-ho, presented/distributed by SHOWBOX, produced by Wow Point·Smilegate, co-produced by Midnight Studio) has dominated the box office. Having opened with the biggest opening score of 2026, "Gunche" reached a milestone with an ultra-fast breakthrough of 2 million admissions on the afternoon of the 25th, its fifth day since release.
On the 26th, according to the integrated computer network of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), "Gunche" recorded cumulative admissions of 2,000,005 on the afternoon of the 25th (KOFIC), reaching the 2 million mark faster than any film released this year. With this, "Gunche" surpassed strong hits of the year such as "The King's Warden," "Salmokji: Whispering Water," and "Project Hail Mary," setting a new shortest-time record.
In particular, this 2 million milestone is even more notable because it reached the mark a day faster than "My Daughter is a Zombie," the highest-grossing Korean film of 2025. Holding the No. 1 spot at the box office since its release and continuing an uncontested run, the film industry is watching to see what new records "Gunche" will set going forward.
"Gunche" is a work that depicts trapped survivors in a building sealed off by a mysterious infection who confront infected people evolving in unpredictable ways. Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, it stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Changwook, Shin Hyun-been, Kim Shin-rock, and Go Soo. It was recently invited to the midnight screening section at the Cannes Film Festival, where it held its world premiere screening and received about seven minutes of standing ovations.
