The drama Perfect Crown is facing fallout over historical distortion allegations, and a petition demanding the removal of the content posted on the National Assembly petition board gained 50,000 supporters in four days.
As of the morning of the 26th, a post titled "Petition requesting suspension of broadcast of the drama involved in historical distortion and Northeast Project controversy and measures to remove content from media platforms" on the National Assembly electronic petition website's public agreement board surpassed 50,000 supporters.
Accordingly, the petition posted on the 22nd met the committee referral requirement of "50,000 supporters within 30 days" early in four days.
The petitioner said, "Clear factual errors and direction that appears to reflect the Northeast Project intentions of a certain country have been repeatedly exposed, provoking public outrage," and pointed out the chant "cheonse" that demeans the Republic of Korea to the level of a vassal state, the use of Chinese-style tea ceremony methods, and errors in national symbol attire.
Accordingly, the petitioner proposed, "We request that the Korea Communications Standards Commission and relevant ministries issue an immediate order to suspend the broadcast of Perfect Crown, which has carried out serious historical distortion and cultural encroachment; to forcibly delete and remove the program from already released domestic and overseas VOD and over-the-top (OTT) services to prevent the spread of distorted culture worldwide; and to establish a permanent expulsion system such as excluding broadcasting production companies that harm national identity and cultural sovereignty under the shield of fiction from future government funding and restricting their broadcasting licenses."
When a National Assembly public agreement petition gains 50,000 supporters, it is officially accepted, referred to the relevant committee, and undergoes formal review procedures. The petition that received 50,000 supporters is also expected to lead the National Assembly to review the production process and the overall review system.
Meanwhile, Perfect Crown recorded high public interest and ratings and concluded its run, but controversy over historical distortion and the Northeast Project arose after episode 11 aired on the 15th and showed the emperor (king) of an independent nation wearing a guryumyeong-gwan, which signifies a vassal lord who is a subject of the emperor, rather than a sipimyeon-gwan, a crown with 12 rows of jewels; and depicted the chant "cheonse," used by vassal states when subordinated to an emperor, instead of "manse," a symbol of national independence.
As the controversy grew, lead actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok, director Park Jun-hwa, and writer Yoo Ji-won posted official apologies and moved to contain the situation, but critical public opinion continues.
