Actor Hwang Jung-eum belatedly spoke out herself about the so-called "waste giveaway" controversy surrounding the free distribution of her children's toys.
Hwang Jung-eum mentioned the situation during the toy giveaway in a video titled "A day dyeing my hair with my 72-year-old father" that was released on her YouTube channel on the 26th.
While introducing her new home that day, Hwang Jung-eum burst into laughter as she saw the toys piled up again in one corner of the living room. She said, "I gave away countless toys, but it was Kang-sik's birthday a few days ago," and added, "this much appeared again," sharing the real struggles of parenting.
When the production staff remarked, "Now that you mention it, you did give them away," Hwang Jung-eum candidly explained the controversy that arose at the time. Hwang Jung-eum said, "I intended to give them away for a good cause, but because the items weren't organized and I hurriedly took photos and uploaded them, it caused a lot of misunderstanding." She added, "Still, the people who came in person spoke kindly and said they would use them well, so it was wrapped up nicely."
Earlier in February, Hwang Jung-eum posted photos on social media of toys her two sons had used, saying, "I'm giving away toys for free." However, as images of the toys mixed together on the floor were released, some criticized that they "looked like waste" and asked, "Isn't this lacking in consideration?"
However, some netizens who later visited the scene explained that "the situation differed from the article" and that it "did not look like waste at all," prompting reactions that the controversy was overheated.
In the end, about three months later Hwang Jung-eum personally explained the situation. What began with good intentions spread into an unexpected misunderstanding, but with testimonials from those who participated in the giveaway, the matter appears to have ended as a minor incident.
Netizens have reacted with comments such as "The process of conveying good intentions is important," "It seems the misunderstanding grew too large," and "I'm glad it was wrapped up well."
