Comedians Kim Yeong-hee and Lee Kyung-sil offered warm yet realistic encouragement to an expectant mother about to begin a second life as "mom."
On the evening of the 25th at 9:30 p.m., KBS2's Malja Show aired a special on "life: second act," giving those at a new starting line time to share their varied concerns.
What drew the most attention that day was the story of an expectant mother about to give birth. "Life as a mom, second act—can I start it well?" the correspondent's candid worry prompted "Malja Halmae" Kim Yeong-hee to open up with deep empathy.
Kim Yeong-hee said, "For me, becoming my daughter's mother, rather than getting married, was the start of the 'life: second act.' That changed my life the most," and shared her own experiences. She drew attention with frank remarks that shattered common public illusions about maternal instinct. She said, "I thought maternal instinct would come immediately after giving birth, but it doesn't come from the start. Maternal instinct develops as you raise the child," pointing out a facet of real childcare.
Kim Yeong-hee confessed a harrowing anecdote about grabbing a weapon and leaving the house to protect her daughter during a blackout. She recalled, "Once, while bathing with my daughter, the lights in the house went out. I didn't think it was a power outage; I thought someone had broken into the house," and added, "I'm the nervous type, so I told my daughter to hide well in the bathroom and walked around the house with a weapon."
Kim Yeong-hee said, "After wandering around the house like that for a while, my daughter came out of the bathroom with desperate eyes and clung to me. I didn't have the courage to go into the master bedroom, so I held my daughter tightly, didn't even put on clothes, and fell asleep by the window," and recounted, "Only after that incident did I finally realize that I was a mother and that this child was my daughter," which moved listeners.
Now raising a "terrible 5-year-old" and in the midst of parenting wars, she said, "I think being a mother is also a job. I hope the correspondent takes pride in being a mother and has a life of growing alongside the child," offering steady advice.
Added to the emotion was the priceless advice of senior guest Lee Kyung-sil. Lee Kyung-sil said, "From the moment you give birth, you experience emotions you didn't know before," and empathized, "After giving birth through hardship, your feelings toward your own mother change first." She also said, "When you raise a child, you feel that what you lived before was nothing and realize a 'second life.' I hope the correspondent lives a happy life," sending warm blessings.
