Model and broadcaster Lee Hyun revealed why she sent her two sons to a private elementary school.
Lee Hyun uploaded a video titled "Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with sending both sons to a private elementary school?" to her YouTube channel "Working Mom Lee Hyun" on the 23rd.
Lee Hyun said, "My husband also graduated from Jungdaebu Elementary School with our children. So the father and the two children attended the same elementary school. If you live in that neighborhood, that can happen, but since it's private, these days wherever you go people often ask, 'Does the younger one also attend Jungdaebu Elementary?' and then ask, 'Did he get in because his older brother attended?' In fact, there is no sibling admission at all," she said.
She added, "When selecting the first students they draw randomly by lottery, and if siblings apply but the lottery doesn't work out for them, then the next waiting spot is also decided by the same lottery."
On why she insisted on a private elementary school, she said, "Because I'm a working mom, private elementary schools tend to have later dismissal times."
Lee Hyun's husband Hong Seong-gi said, "The decisive factor is that I also attended that school, and my older sister attended it too. My cousin is a twin, and both twin brothers attended that school. A younger cousin also attended. Six of us attended that school. Five out of six were satisfied. Honestly, looking back on my elementary, middle and high school years, elementary school was the best for me."
He continued, "With that in mind, I wanted our children to attend the same school, so I told my wife, 'If possible, let's enroll them in Jungdaebu Elementary.' I still remember the elementary and high school songs among elementary, middle and high school. I think having affection for one's school is the criterion for a prestigious school. A school where affection for the school remains is important," he added.
But his sister was not satisfied. He said, "My sister was not satisfied. When she attended school she was very popular. She said it was too competitive. She said she disliked being pushed to study too much. Even now, among private elementary schools, Jungdaebu Elementary is known for having a heavier emphasis on academics, but I didn't feel that way at the time; my sister said she did feel that way," he said.
