Chef Kwon Seong-jun said he once worked as the youngest kitchen staff in Italy.
On the 21st, the tvN variety program Undercover Chef featured Sam Kim, Jung Ji-seon and Chef Kwon Seong-jun disguising themselves as the youngest kitchen staff while working abroad.
That day the production team asked Chef Kwon Seong-jun about his time as the youngest staff. Kwon Seong-jun recalled, "I think I just worked hard. There was a famous restaurant on the island of Ischia in Naples. It was my first kitchen experience," he recalled.
He said, "I usually started work at 9 a.m. and finished at 1 a.m.," adding, "I worked six days a week, so that means I worked 96 hours a week. There was no time to rest. The intensity of the labor was insane."
He went on, "We really couldn't understand each other, and Neapolitan dialect is strong there, so I got cursed at a lot," saying, "Communication is important in the kitchen, and when there is no communication it is frustrating," evoking the helplessness of the time.
Kwon Seong-jun calmly said, "The kitchen is urgent down to the minute and second, and I couldn't understand. Then someone else had to do the work. So I was cursed at a lot. If there are dozens of curses that exist in Italy, I think I tried at least ten of each."
But because he had that time, he said he is who he is now, adding, "The reason I worked being cursed at without pay is that there is a saying that there is no paradise where you ran away to. There I learned the attitude, passion and mindset as a chef," he added, raising anticipation for his undercover kitchen work as a chance to challenge himself again.
