Actor Jae-hee candidly revealed the hiatus and financial hardship she experienced after a heyday that once swept living room theaters. She even confessed that she worked in restaurant kitchens and took night shifts at convenience stores to make a living.
Recently, on broadcaster Shin Jung-hwan's YouTube channel "Daktashin," Jae-hee appeared and recounted the period when her acting career was sparse.
Jae-hee recalled the time when she gained explosive popularity after the drama "Kwae-geol Chunhyang" in which she appeared after being discharged from the military. She said, "At the director's suggestion, I filmed a serial for the first time, and the response was so good that the ratings hit number one in history."
But she said the situation changed afterward, contrary to expectations. Jae-hee said, "Even though the ratings topped the charts, when I went to movie meetings I heard, 'You filmed a serial,'" and added, "The lineup of incoming projects changed drastically." She said there was an atmosphere that doing serials lowered an actor's rank. Jae-hee expressed her frustration, "I don't know where that perception started. Actors who did serials will sympathize."
In the end, Jae-hee said she chose a hiatus herself. "If I kept doing only serials, it would repeat like a vicious cycle," she said, adding, "I thought if I disappeared for a while and came back the atmosphere would be different, so I voluntarily took a break." But the reality of the hiatus was not easy. She said, "Because my face was known, even ordinary hiring was not easy, and because of my age it was more difficult," and revealed, "I worked in restaurant kitchens for a long time and also worked night shifts at convenience stores."
She surprised those around her by revealing eczema on her hands caused by wearing rubber gloves for long periods while working in the kitchen. Jae-hee said, "Recently I also started live streaming," and added, "While doing live broadcasts I worked at the restaurant and took night shifts at the convenience store."
The actor who once received great love as Lee Mong-ryong in "Kwae-geol Chunhyang" has received much support from many people for the times she fought hard offstage to make a living.
