The nonprofit Korea Music Copyright Association (chairperson Lee Si-ha, hereinafter KMCA), which led the launch of the "K-rights holders' organizations cooperative committee (hereinafter the cooperative committee)," is preparing to pursue joint projects to reorganize the music copyright order in the AI era.
The cooperative committee is a joint cooperation body formed to strengthen the music rights protection system in response to changes in the AI environment, including the Korea Music Copyright Association, the Korea Popular Music Industry Association (chairperson Woo Seung-hyun), the Korea Entertainment Producers Association (chairperson Im Baek-woon), the Recording Industry Association of Korea (chairperson Choi Kyung-sik), the Korea Music Performers' Federation (chairperson Lee Jung Hyun), and the Association for Music Copyright Together (chairperson Han Dong-heon).
The cooperative committee, which officially launched on Feb. 2, has, based on discussions to date, concretized major projects and entered the full implementation phase. The core projects are: AI music identification program joint adoption; construction of an integrated K-Music code database; research service for revision of the Copyright Act for AI; research service for revision of AI collection regulations; and research service for revision of broadcasting collection regulations — five in total — pursuing both the construction of technology and data infrastructure and the legal and institutional research services to support them.
KMCA will bear more than half of the budget for each project and lead the joint project implementation. The cooperative committee said it plans to flexibly form and operate participating associations according to the nature and purpose of each task.
Lee Si-ha, chairperson of the cooperative committee and chairperson of KMCA, said, "We must move law and institutions, technology, and data together to protect creators' rights. KMCA's taking on a large share as Korea's largest music copyright collective management organization is also an extension of that responsibility."
He added, "The cooperative committee is moving beyond a launch declaration to carry out joint research, technology adoption, and integrated infrastructure construction," and emphasized, "The six organizations will work together so that Korea's music rights holders can receive proper rights and compensation amid changes in the AI era."
