"K-pop Demon Hunters" director confessed that Korean actor Song Joong-ki had a great influence on the work.
Netflix's global hit 'K-pop Demon Hunters' co-director Chris Appelhans reveals the behind-the-scenes story of the work for the first time.
On May 21 at 8:30 p.m., MBC Every1's "Welcome, First Time in Korea?" will feature co-director Chris Appelhans of the Netflix animation "K-pop Demon Hunters," who, along with director Maggie Kang, will make his first appearance on Korean variety shows and personally describe the production process.
Director Chris Appelhans debuted with the low-budget animation "Wish Dragon" and immediately gained global success, drawing industry attention. He later received such full trust from Sony Pictures that they told him, "You can make whatever you want," and he honestly reveals why he chose "K-pop Demon Hunters" among numerous project offers.
In particular, he said he actively referred to Korean dramas and actors' performances to express characters' emotions and details, drawing attention. He analyzed dramas Vincenzo, Crash Landing on You, Boys Over Flowers and studied the emotional lines and character expression methods, and it is reported that he completed the emotional details of the main character "Jin-woo" by referring to Song Joong-ki's facial acting in Vincenzo, drawing interest.
He also said that the facial acting and emotional expressions of Korean actors such as IU, Son Ye-jin, Kim Taeri, Yoo Yeon-seok and Park Seo Jun influenced the character-building process, which is expected to pique the interest of K-content fans.
Also in the broadcast, the interior of Sony Pictures, a leading animation studio in Hollywood, and the actual "K-pop Demon Hunters" workspace will be revealed on TV for the first time. Director Chris introduces the space where he worked and the production process he directly worked on, delivering vivid behind-the-scenes stories of how famous scenes in the work were born. It is said that they will even reveal their own "must-have items for working late" that allowed them to work late into the night with director Maggie Kang, increasing curiosity.
The unexpected clumsy charm of director Chris, known as a perfectionist, will also be revealed. Previously, he attracted attention for eating Shin Ramyun at the Oscars, and he brings laughter with unexpected sloppy aspects in this broadcast as well. In particular, it is said that an exhilarating incident occurred in which he lost an Oscar trophy while in Korea ahead of a Netflix press conference, increasing curiosity.
Earlier, "K-pop Demon Hunters" made headlines with records surpassing Netflix's biggest hit "Squid Game Season" after its release. It was also reported that the boy idol group Saja Boys' center Jin-woo was inspired by Cha Eun-woo, and actual models such as Song Joong-ki and H.O.T. are being revealed.
In the past, director Maggie Kang said she was an H.O.T. fan and that Saja Boys were influenced by H.O.T., and Tony Ahn said, "I didn't expect her to mention us directly. I feel grateful and I definitely want to meet them once." Kangta also said, "I didn't know at first. I couldn't imagine that we were models. Later I found out that Jang Woo-hyuk hyung and Hee-joon had those hairstyles." Jang Woo-hyuk added, "I think Jin-woo is Kangta."
