Actor Gong Seung-yeon received praise for her acting as Perfect Crown, but on You Quiz on the Block all remarks related to Perfect Crown were erased. Even Yu Jae-seok's introduction line changed.
On the 20th broadcast of tvN You Quiz on the Block, Gong Seung-yeon appeared as a guest and talked with Yu Jae-seok.
That day Gong Seung-yeon mentioned seven years as an SM trainee and anecdotes with her younger sister TWICE Jeongyeon and continued a tumultuous set of episodes, but stories actually related to Perfect Crown did not air.
The atmosphere was somewhat different from the previously released preview. In the preview Yu Jae-seok introduced Gong Seung-yeon as "having reached a peak 15 years after debut as Perfect Crown," and Gong Seung-yeon also expressed confidence, saying, "I will also try to board the IU, Byeon Woo-seok train."
However, in the broadcast Yu Jae-seok's lines were edited. The drama title was not mentioned, and Yu Jae-seok said of Gong Seung-yeon that "she reached a peak 15 years after debut." Gong Seung-yeon's mentions of IU and Byeon Woo-seok also disappeared, and the captions differed from the preview.
Perhaps because Perfect Crown was reduced across the board. Gong Seung-yeon's screen time was about 20 minutes. Compared with actors Yoo Seung-mok and singer Rain, who appeared in the same episode and had about 30 minutes each, the difference was clear. Although she appeared essentially because of Perfect Crown, most related content was edited out, seemingly mindful of controversy over historical distortion of the drama.
Meanwhile, Perfect Crown ended with high public interest and ratings, but in the 11th episode broadcast on the 15th the coronation scene showed the emperor (king) of the independent state wearing a "guryumyeongwan," which signifies a feudal lord serving the emperor, rather than the "sipimyeonryugwan" with 12 rows of jewels for an emperor; and the scene showed people shouting "cheonse"—used when a vassal state is subordinate to an imperial state—rather than the "manse" that symbolizes an independent state, sparking controversy over historical distortion and Northeast Project issues.
As the controversy grew, lead actors IU and Byeon Woo-seok, director Park Joon-hwa and writer Yoo Ji-won, who wrote the script, posted official apologies and moved to contain the situation.<
