Actor Gang Dong-won confessed on 'Study King True Genius' that he prepared with such passion for the film "Wild Sing" that he even did headspins himself.
On the 21st, the YouTube channel Study King True Genius Hong Jin Kyung ran an episode titled "The scramble of three women who had all their energy drained by Gang Dong-won! First public revealing of an unprecedented life story (Jang Young-ran, Lee Ji Hye)" featuring Gang Dong-won as a guest.
That day Hong Jin Kyung wanted to form a mixed-gender group together with Jang Young-ran and Lee Ji Hye. With a concept similar to 1990s idol stars, Hong Jin Kyung would be "Hongshu," Jang Young-ran "Chanel," and Lee Ji Hye "Gabi," forming the group, and they then held auditions to select a male member. When Nam Chang Hee and Gang Dong-won appeared as audition applicants, Nam Chang Hee ended up as the host and all attention was focused on Gang Dong-won.
In particular, Gang Dong-won will meet audiences with his new film "Wild Sing," which opens on June 3. "Wild Sing" is a comedy about a three-member mixed-gender dance group called "Triangle" that once swept the pop music scene but suddenly disbanded after an unexpected incident and now takes a reckless challenge to seize a comeback opportunity 20 years later, and it raised expectations that Gang Dong-won even performed difficult choreography like headspins to portray a member of a mixed-gender group. In response, Lee Ji Hye showed curiosity, saying, "There are many reactions wondering why he suddenly is working so hard."
He calmly said, "I just did what I always do. For me, 'Wild Sing' was another action film. That was my goal. My goal was to dance really well and make it oddly funny. Singers really practice a lot, right? I didn't want to be the one lacking in that."
In fact, Gang Dong-won said he lived in the practice room learning dance every day for three to four hours for five months. Even he said, "I really didn't know hip-hop. I didn't really listen to it and didn't know what it was. I studied hip-hop's history first and then learned the dance."
He added, "I still remember that I asked to be introduced to someone who does breakdance and learned, and they said breakdance is basically a battle so you have to keep looking at your opponent. They demonstrated in front of me and kept glaring at me while doing it. I thought I should use this in the film."
Gang Dong-won said, "While learning dance I did six-step and headspins and such. I almost died doing a headspin. I did the direct spin that goes all the way around, but I don't know whether they used that in the edited cut or not," which surprised people.
He went on to say, "For breakdance, having longer legs is a disadvantage. It was very hard," yet he added, "Originally I used to just be at indie clubs when older guys I knew DJed, but these days when I go I even wave my hands," drawing cheers as he rode the rhythm.
Finally he said, "When filming was all over, it felt such a waste for the practice I had done. I filmed dancing and doing headspins with a photographer I know," and said he plans to release it if the film "Wild Sing" surpasses 3 million viewers, raising expectations.
