Comedian Kim Shin-young revealed the heartwarming behind-the-scenes story that led her to put an end to a diet she had maintained for a full 14 years.
On the 19th, Kim Shin-young, appearing on the YouTube channel Rolling Thunder's program "New Women," confessed that she had no choice but to start dieting due to serious health warning signs, including past hormonal abnormalities, polycystic ovary syndrome, fatty liver and hyperlipidemia. She went on to say that she has recently gained weight again and drew attention by saying, "The reaction around me is so good, and my irritation has disappeared, so I'm very happy now."
In particular, the reason Kim Shin-young boldly stopped the diet she had kept for so long involved a special anecdote with her life senior and mentor Jeon Yoo-sung. Recalling the time she had carefully nursed Jeon Yoo-sung while he was bedridden, Kim Shin-young began, "The signal that called me was the teacher, who was wearing an oxygen mask, tapping three times, tap tap tap." She said, "One day the teacher gave me the signal and said, 'I really want jjamppong but I can't eat it. So you, don't hold back—eat and live,'" which moved listeners. Kim Shin-young said memories flashed by of all the times she had refused bread or chocolate because of dieting, and added, "I think that remark stayed on the teacher's mind. After that, I started eating comfortably," revealing the reason she ended her diet.
Meanwhile, the pleasant side effects(?) that appeared after she stopped dieting were also revealed, provoking laughter. Kim Shin-young said, "These days I can't even go out for walks freely. When I meet people on the street they stop me, saying, 'Why? Are you walking to lose weight? Please don't walk,'" which turned the set into a sea of laughter. In addition, Kim Shin-young showcased her trademark grandmother impression and perfectly depicted the characteristics of singers she met while hosting Korea Sings, displaying her unchanged unique entertainment sense. She also delivered a wealth of amusement by revealing episodes from her heyday when she ran a killer schedule—stories ranging from the dizzying episode of sparring with Cho Hye-lyeon that drew blood to her time on Se-bak-kwae, Youth Unstoppable, and working as a radio DJ.
Above all, her frank confessions about her relationships with senior figures such as Lee Kyung-sil and Cho Hye-lyeon added warmth. Kim Shin-young, who was raised by her grandmother and did not know well how to get close to the previous generation, said that although she received great love from seniors during her Se-bak-kwae days, she still couldn't easily approach them. She revealed her matured inner self, saying, "Before I knew it I was over 40, and I often think, 'Can I, like those two seniors in their day, treat juniors warmly?'"
Appearing with her, Lee Kyung-sil added, "A few years ago Shin-young called and said, 'Seniority, I'm sorry. I knew I was grateful, but I was too young then,'" and she added the touching anecdote, "Since then she sends good meat every now and then. I thought, now Shin-young truly accepts us," filling the studio with warm emotion.
