Actor Oh Yeon-a played a leading role in a powerful reversal narrative in ENA's Monday-Tuesday drama Scarecrow.
ENA's Monday-Tuesday drama Scarecrow (directed by Park Jun-woo, written by Lee Ji-hyun) is a work that depicts the story of a detective investigating the real culprit of a series of murders who unexpectedly forms a cooperative relationship with the man he despised. While it has been recording high buzz with tense moments and thrilling reversals each episode, actor Oh Yeon-a appeared as the mother who drives the twisted childhood narrative of Kang Tae-Ju (Park Hae-soo) and Kang Soon-young (Seo Ji-hye).
Previously, Oh Yeon-a realistically portrayed a mother who was endlessly cold and distant toward her children. In the scene where she snaps at Kang Tae-Ju, who wants to go to college, coldly waving her hand and telling him to go on his own, she fully revealed the character's heartlessness with an irritated high-toned voice, a sharp gaze and a furrowed expression. Moreover, her precarious continued encounters with Cha Moo-jin (played by Yoo Seung-mok), the father of Cha Si-young, while leaving her sick child behind, immediately convinced viewers of the tangled tragic relationships and the deep emotional rifts between the characters.
However, in episode 10, when the shocking reversal Oh Yeon-a had been hiding was unveiled, the tone of the drama sharply reversed. What had seemed like neglect of her children was revealed to be a past in which she desperately struggled to protect her daughter Kang Soon-young.
In particular, with the revelation that Kang Soon-young was Cha Moo-jin's blood relative, Oh Yeon-a's cool yet resolute gaze stood out as she firmly demanded that Cha Moo-jin register her daughter on the family register despite her fear. Above all, in the tragic moment facing death, her harrowing performance in which she finally unleashed her hidden sincerity and desperate worry for her daughter left viewers' hearts heavy and evoked deep sympathy.
In this way, although Oh Yeon-a's appearance in Scarecrow was brief, she played a central role in the narrative with dense acting. By finely expressing the complex and three-dimensional emotional line hidden behind the cold face that seemed unconcerned about her children, she is said to have elevated the work's completeness.
