Actor Hwang Jung-eum, who returned via YouTube after the 4.3 billion won embezzlement controversy, opened up about the difficult emotions she has experienced.
On the 19th, a video titled "Long time no see | a year later, sharing what's happened" was uploaded to Hwang Jung-eum's YouTube channel.
That day, when asked why she hesitated to start a YouTube channel but ultimately decided to do so, Iyoo "I am grateful that people come to find me again. If someone asks me to do something, I should do it. I decided because I thought I should do it when people come to find me. Since I'm doing it anyway, I want to become Korea's top YouTuber," she joked.
She said, "I've been through so many things. Seeing how exhausted I was made me realize there must be so many people in this world who are struggling. Single-parent households. People like me. And mothers raising sons. I just want to be a friend to them, so they won't be lonely. Isn't life really lonely? I have to handle everything by myself. But I want to let people know they're not alone. If anyone asks me anything, I want to tell them, 'Do it this way, do it that way.' It could be a problem if the problem is like Hwang Jung-eum's. But I want to help solve it," she said.
When asked what her situation is now after receiving a suspended sentence on embezzlement charges, Hwang Jung-eum said, "I don't even know what the situation is. I'm mentally exhausted to that extent. So I'm grateful for very small things. I'm grateful that I don't have to do anything. I'm grateful that I don't have to solve everything. I'm someone who is grateful to have been born into this world and grateful to be alive, so I think all these things will pass. Because my married life was so unhappy, I didn't think embezzlement or these incidents were things to be sorry about or things I had to fix because they made me unhappy. Unhappiness is when there's no end in sight, right? Apart from being in a marriage that didn't end in divorce. There was nothing else unhappy about my life," she said candidly.
Later, when Hwang Jung-eum met again with the production team that came to her home, she showed enthusiasm, saying, "It's so good. The production team has come to me like this. Actually, I thought no one would look for me anymore," and "So I think I'll take things a little slower and try to do well."
In response, the production team mentioned that the divorce procedure had been completed, saying, "Now you're really single," and Hwang Jung-eum, while saying, "Yes," put on a bitter expression and said, "I thought I would only be happy." She became emotional, saying, "From the moment I started being 'single,' I thought my life would go up. 'Is my time coming again? All right, I'll show you.' But then, 'Huh? Again? Still?' It seems everything is really over now. But I'm exhausted. From trying to resolve everything. The energy I had is gone; what can I do. I have to at least laugh. It's sad," and she choked up with reddened eyes.
Wiping back tears, Hwang Jung-eum was asked, "What do you want to show through YouTube?" and she replied, "I failed at marriage, and this time I failed at making money, I failed at everything, didn't I? I really lived earnestly. So I want to let people know those things. Don't go through what I went through. Take it easier. Don't struggle like I did. That's what I want to tell people. Go peacefully, don't make it hard on yourself," and she added with a laugh, "I'll do whatever you ask. Please save me."
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung-eum married a non-celebrity one year younger in 2016 and has two sons. Before the birth of her second son, the couple once faced a divorce crisis but patched up their differences, and after the birth of their second son it seemed they were rebuilding a happy family, but they filed for divorce again in 2024. During that process, there were controversies as she continued to take shots at her ex-husband, but in May last year they finalized the divorce procedure and went their separate ways. However, it later emerged that Hwang Jung-eum had embezzled about 4.34 billion won of company funds, sparking controversy, and Hwang Jung-eum was sentenced to two years in prison with a four-year suspended sentence at trial.
