"Perfect Crown' history distortion' was sharply criticized by Korean history lecturer Choi Tae-sung, who apologized to the lead actors a day later.
'Big Star Teacher' Choi Tae-sung on the 19th said "I apologize to the actors who were hurt by the post I uploaded yesterday. Seeing actress IU crying at the solo screening and seeing actor Byeon's handwritten letter made my heart ache," and said, "I wrote that systems need to be restructured so this won't happen again, but the fallout seems to be landing in the wrong place. I sometimes confuse historical terms too. It is unreasonable to demand that actors understand those professional terms and situations," he said.
He went on to say, "The authentication system should be a solid armor protecting actors, but it is always loose and insecure, so I wrote that we should stop making actors the scapegoats and proposed a historical authentication research institute. That way the actors we love won't be embarrassed again," and "Instead of attacking people, I hope we pool wisdom to build a stronger authentication system. I also hope government agencies such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism allocate at least part of their budgets to this," mentioning the core of the message he wanted to convey.
Choi Tae-sung also emphasized, "I hope that when actors sign contracts, where, from whom and to what extent authentication was received becomes one of the important conditions for selecting a project," and "I ask production teams to pay appropriate expense and time to authentication institutes. Authentication institutes should provide safe, verified databases based on systematic research to help build the worldviews that films or drama need."
Finally he added, "That way the writer's imagination, the director's directing and the actor's acting will be protected," and "That way Korea's k-drama will give greater healing and emotion to people on Earth."
Earlier, MBC's Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown revealed in episode 11 the coronation scene of male lead Crown Prince Iaan (played by Byeon Woo-seok), in which the court hat of a vassal state, the gu-ryu menryugwan, appeared and the shout was 'cheonse'—referring to the vassal state's king—instead of the emperor's 'manse.' This sparked fierce criticism, saying it could provide grounds for China's historical distortion Northeast Project (an attempt to incorporate the histories of countries in northeastern China into its own history) to claim Joseon was a vassal state.
On his personal SNS, Choi Tae-sung pointed out the history distortion of 'Dae Gunbuin,' saying, "Another history distortion controversy. At this point are we goldfish? Please pull yourselves together," and "Nine strings? The emperor has 12! Chonchonse? The emperor has manmanse."
He added, "Right now we are leading global Hallyu culture. Drama, movies? It's not just us watching. People around the world are watching. Our image is spreading and being imprinted quickly. Now we need a system befitting that stature. We still don't have this system or it's at a handicraft level. Historical terms. Costumes, lines. Every time a history distortion controversy breaks out it's always the same," and emphasized, "Please respect the academic field of history. While actors' appearance fees are paid without hesitation at several hundred million won, why are historical authentication costs rounded off to a few hundred thousand won? Why are they so stingy? Why is the time required for authentication for program production so ignored? I hope the field of history creates a historical authentication research institute. If producers don't worry and entrust works to an authentication institute, the institute can safely solve script, costumes and sets one-stop."
But amid criticisms that he harshly blamed actors instead of production teams and broadcasters that did not complete authentication, it appears lecturer Choi Tae-sung left a post saying, "I'm sorry."

I apologize to the actors who were hurt by the post I uploaded yesterday. Seeing actress IU crying at the solo screening and seeing actor Byeon's handwritten letter made my heart ache.
I wrote that systems need to be restructured so this won't happen again, but the fallout seems to be landing in the wrong place. I sometimes confuse historical terms too. It is unreasonable to demand that actors understand those professional terms and situations.
I proposed a historical authentication research institute while writing that authentication systems should be a solid armor protecting actors, but because they are always loose and unstable actors become scapegoats and that should stop. That way the actors we love won't be embarrassed again.
Instead of attacking people, I hope we pool wisdom to build a stronger authentication system. I also hope government agencies such as the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism allocate at least part of their budgets to this.
I hope that when actors sign contracts, where, from whom and to what extent authentication was received becomes one of the important conditions for selecting a project. I ask production teams to pay appropriate expense and time to authentication institutes. Authentication institutes should provide safe, verified databases based on systematic research to help build the worldviews that films or drama need.
That way the writer's imagination, the director's directing and the actor's acting will be protected.
That way Korea's k-drama will give greater healing and emotion to people on Earth.
A person who cherishes and enjoys k-drama writes.
