'Perfect Crown' remains embroiled in controversy over historical distortion even after its finale, and the production is attempting to contain the fallout by muting the criticized "cheoncheonse" scene.
On the 19th, streaming services such as Wavve and Disney+ released a new version of episode 11 of MBC's Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown.
Earlier, episode 11 of Perfect Crown ended with a scene at the coronation of Prince IAAN (played by Byeon Woo-seok), in which he attended wearing a guryu myeonryugwan and was heard by attendees saying "cheonse cheonse cheoncheonse". The problem is that the scene provided fodder for China's historical distortion campaign, Northeast Project.
Guryu myeonryugwan is a headpiece worn by the rulers of vassal states under an imperial nation, and "cheonse" is also a phrase directed toward the rulers of vassal states. An imperial nation should use a sipi myeonryugwan and the phrase "manse." Although the setting was said to be a fictional constitutional monarchy, the appearance of such settings in Perfect Crown fueled widespread criticism that Korean content had handed ammunition to the Northeast Project, which claims Joseon was a vassal state of China.
As a result, after the finale there was even domestic public opinion calling for Perfect Crown to be withdrawn. The production team apologized on the official website and announced plans for corrections.
In fact, in the rebroadcast of episode 11 of Perfect Crown the audio and subtitles of the "cheonse" scene were immediately edited out. Although the guryu myeonryugwan worn by Prince IAAN, played by Byeon Woo-seok, was not altered, the edits appear to have been made insofar as they did not disrupt viewing.
Afterward, domestic streaming services, starting with Wavve, sequentially replaced the episode with the edited version. In the case of Disney+, the edited version was replaced first in Korea and other markets, but because it is a global platform, creating multilingual subtitles and related work is expected to take time. <
